To your questions, yes, yes, yes, and yes. And unsurprisingly, it doesn’t make your thinking any less appalling, or Bluespunk any less right.

IMO, Thais speak loudly as the Thai language is a tonal language just as is Chinese.  Speaking loudly helps you to inflect and give all those tones to the words.  Also, back in the day when I first came to Thailand in 1971, the landline phone connections were very poor.  You needed to shout to make sure the distant end person could hear you.  My Thai wife of 45 years speaks English at low volume, Thai at higher volume, and Chinese at even higher volume.  LOL

speaking loudly is one thing, bellowing is another.

Guys please ! This is "the pub" its light hearted banter, a place to chill and maybe have a laugh along the way.

If you want to turn to a more serious side there are plenty of topics in the news forum to debate and scrutinize and cross examine each other.

Thanks.

Sorry Charlie! I was responding at the same time you were posting. Im back to sterotyping loud cute Thai girls with hideous feet. ?

Speaking of loud, so I am in the Mall at Thapra earlier and they have this whole hall of beauty gig which i have to pass through to get to wherever. Figuring I can save a trip to Siam to go to Sephora for my kid and thereby avoiding the hordes of stereotypical pushing, shoving, loud and spitting Chinese tourists, I ask one the the make up girls "Sephora here". This paragon of femininity just bellows SEPHORAAAAAAAH to the next girl who then belllows SEPHORAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH??????  to another, who runs over, wais and tells me no. Siam, kah.

You know I hadn’t thought about that.

But Mrs G when she speaks Thai or Lao it's much much louder than when she speaks English.

I speak Thai & Mandarin, maybe I need to be more conscious of my own volume!

Yikes

I find the drunk screechers in British pubs to be just a bad. To say nothing of entitled Serena Williams types. But the 'Bahn Nok' comment is a border line racial  slur used by pale faced, monied hi so Thais to dismiss Issan people and darker skinned Thais in general. The contempt of city dwellers for country folk is a umiversal predudice.

When the missus is talking with family/friends and shifts into Isaan/Loei/Lao, the volume increases by about 3 db, not to mention the speed. Sounds mean and businesslike, too.

The 2-hour luncheons at home can get pretty noisy too.  Thais and Malaysians, so it's mostly English.  Sounds like a fight in a hen house.

To OP:

Never experienced that, so I'm not sure what you talk about. But IMHO if its the girl shouting is the girl selling chicken to you I would call it "Advertising"

You mean like she is saying " hey girls the falang is too fat to just eat one piece of chicken, start showing him what you got"...

Do you know average middle class Thais? My Thai friends of that level tend to be much more reserved.

The lower strata of most countries tend to be louder than the higher. IMHO  And sometimes more fun. Go with the flow.

You get what you pay for. Your mileage may vary. Look both ways before crossing even on a one way street.

In case you have missed out on the higher strata, just tune in to the nightly and daily Hi/So "Lakons"; Soap Operas, on TV. and watch the upper classes, the Gentry, your betters, screech away

The real question is, are the TV shows a reflection of the basic Thai caterwauling screaming and insanity in Thai households and relationships. Or do the TV shows provide important cultural educational service on how to behave IE screaming crying, fighting, killing, madness for the public at large?

The question has been debated but remains unanswered.

Curiously I was taking about this with my stepson last week.

He was visiting us with with his American girlfriend who’s Latina and while Mrs G was watching her Lakorn, the gf was jaw-struck.

He’s now straddling three cultures; Thai, Anglo American, and Latino American, and so it’s a struggle.

So, we’re watching the Thai Lakorn, then switch to a Mexican Telenovela.

So I’m latino, so me and his gf can get into this language wise, but honestly, all four of us concluded, that the Thai Lakorn beat the Telenovela bang to rights, in terms of screaming, face slapping and really good hair!

I'm always enlighten by the ideology of xenophobia behavior expressed by the members...Especially,  when they're not aware that there IQ is the same as a crash dummy. The strawman trying to mimicry having gnosis....Please!

your thought are of someone opinions. Furthermore, if you want to used the word "ghetto" then study and you will be amazed of the originality!!!!

Remember that zero as no value but without it counting would  be impossible.

If you are going to use Google translate, find someone who speaks a little English to make sure its not coming out as nonsense.

PS. Ghetto has a classical meaning but the debate as to how the word is used in the USA was decided maybe in 1968, so it has two meanings now. But you knew that didnt you?

There's nothing classical about the word ghetto....I'm of African ancestry from Queens New York. Germans created areas to confined Jews...that where the name ghetto came from. However, when you want to implement colonialism ideology you attach the word ghetto to a behavior. Furthermore, I  don't need... English translation because I'm a lexicographer....giving you a lesson in etymology.

PS: did you get pick-up by the yellow bus....LOL!!!

Save your breath, brother. This guy is one of those people who, when they find themselves in a hole, think the best way to get out is to keep digging. He has his head so far up his a** he has to emerge from his own throat just to get a gasp of air. Check it out. He has been defending an absolutely hopeless (and malicious) position for days now. Unbelievable.

Y'all need some English lessons then because you still aren't making any sense. And an etymologist would know the origin of the term is uncertain, but was first used in Venice. No Germans there.

Are we supposed to be able to understand this?

Google translate is a wonderful thing, but somewhat flawed, especially I feel, in the Thai to almost any language realm.

I think he/she is one of the Thai zealots trying to tell everyone that we’re lesser humans and Thai are at the top of the food chain!

Well you go for it buddy, knock yourself out...see what google translate makes of this!

No kidding

The word comes from the Italian word getto (“foundry”). The theory is that the Venetian Ghetto was established on the site of an old foundry and thus took its name. Their are debates about the origin of the word but it did come from Venice, and it was the forced living in an area of the city of the Jews by the Doge and council of the city.

Y'all beat me too it!!!!I'm fat and slow!
