PHUKET:-- The Chief of the Phuket Marine Office today confirmed that the plan to raise the sunken tour boat Phoenix is to be fully revised after one of the tethers broke while the salvage operators were trying to move the boat underwater – but not actually raise it.

The news to temporarily scrap the plan to raise the Phoenix was revealed today (Sept 24) by Wiwat Chitchertwong, who is currently the Acting Director of the Phuket Marine Office, confirmed to The Phuket News, “

Mr Wiwat was installed as Acting Director of the Phuket Marine Office after the previous director was transferred in the wake of the Phoenix tour boat disaster on July 5 that killed 47 Chinese tourists, sending the Phoenix to the seabed 45 metres below the water’s surface some 1.5 nautical miles off Koh Hei (Coral Island).

Makes you wonder if there were 12 teenage Thai boys stuck in the wreck and running out of air, with the world watching, what sort of rescue and salvage operation would have taken place.

A successful one.

Still trying to do it on the cheap? I would imagine in salvage operations you would be definitely get what you paid for.

If and when the Phoenix is finally salvaged, they'll probably have spent more than getting a professional team to do it in the first place. It's usually the insurance companies that fund salvage operations but, according to Stevenl, they were uninsured, hence this bloody awful, almost embarrassing, amateur operation is taking place.

This protracted operation while the boat deteriorates under water, the idea of  dragging it along the bottom until the inevitable rope failure, hiding the failure from the public for several days and then abandoning the attempt while they formulate a new plan, suggests to me the plan is something other than salvaging the vessel.

Nothing to do with the owners, it is up to Thai authorities.

Lol... so let’s change the statement to.... “ it might have evidence that indicates neglect by thai authorities, empowered with the responsibility of ensuring maritime safety”

that said, attempting to raise the Phoenix during monsoon season, might not be the best of ideas
