One of two tsunami warning buoys not working since October last year

One of the tsunami buoys, part of the warning system for the Andaman Coast, has been broken since last year.

GMM 25 news quotes the Director of the the National Disaster Warning Centre (NDWC) Suppapimit Paorik as saying… “Only one Tsunami warning buoy is still working. There are two of them. One of them remains broken since October last year.

We believe that fishermen tied their fishing boat to the Tsunami warning buoy to drop an anchor. The Tsunami buoy has been broken.”

No worries. The warning tower system in Phuket doesn't work and there is "a minimal " chance of a tsunami.

This does not surprise me... look around, maintenance is not in Thai’s thinking. Build / implement something new and watch it fall apart. How many of their security cameras are always broken down? No accountability

No money to be made on maintenance. Lots of money to be skimmed on new equipment buy contracts,

Thais are not good in preventive maintenance ... not in their culture. They use equipment until they break down and then repair them.

The good news is that the warning system will work in the event of half a tsunami.

Read in initial reports that the Indonesian buoys were also not working and look what happened to 1500 (so far) of them.

I have not seen this confirmed or denied as yet so cannot say it is accurate.

I don't believe there is a Thai word for "maintenance"?

Life is so cheap in Thailand cheaper than replacing the triple A batteries in the bouy have they not learnt from that terrible disaster that killed so many people yet they will spend millions on buying a second hand submarine from China.

The street light outside my place was out of action for about four years, they fixed it and shortly after it failed again. Still waiting for it to be fixed.

If a simple thing like a street light isn't checked now and again what chance has other stuff got..????

Definitely not that!

But like you, I cannot think of one single humanitarian trait that it will take for Thailand to include 'meaningful' maintenance in their thought process.

I can think of at least 50 examples of this lack of thought process that I have observed or, that has happened to me personally over the last 14 years living in Thailand. (But that's still a conservative number of examples probably).

I thought it was Leum?

Not to worry, when Thailand gets all its new fleet of Stingray submarimes, Thai Troy Tempest will be looking for work whilst prowling the seas for invasion

The glass is half full. One of two work, 50% are working. That's better than normal.

????

You must of course phone them about the problem, and it will be fixed within a day or two.
