I've had several good printers.

I need but only rarely use colors. The consequence= by the time color was needed it had dried out.

Any suggestions?

They dry out if not parked in the right place, if you shut down properly then they will park and seal themselves, but if the power is just cut then they will stay out of park in printing position and will dry out pretty fast.  Best way is just follow the manufacturers instructions, which is use it at least once a week and leave it turned on all the time.

Well at least the yellow won't dry out, it's used to embed identifying information in everything you print. (now you know why it refuses to print black only if the color is out)

 

To prevent drying out, leave the printer switched on (standby) and it'll take care of the drying out by itself.

Printing a color test print once a month or so will be good.

If you want a printer that will print first time, every time, even after several months of sitting ...

 

... buy a laser printer, even colour lasers are not stupidly expensive now, Canon imageCLASS LBP7018C  http://www.invadeit.co.th/product/laser-printers/canon/imageclass-lbp7018c-color-laser-printer--p011404/ 5990 Baht!!

 

 

Laser printers are a good alternative but the picture resolution is better on inkjet ones.

Agreed, but in reality even the 600DPI resolution of the cheapie laser I referenced is more than adequate for most home/home-office use, particularly if you print on heavy glossy laser-photo paper (don't use inkjet paper, it gums up the works).

Me too, about 8 months now, I just print one color page every couple of weeks or so and always good
