Tourism Cruise Tourism Blossoms in Vietnam with Record-Breaking Arrivals
Picture courtesy of Tuoi Tre News Vietnam's cruise tourism industry is riding a wave of unprecedented growth, as luxury cruise ships increasingly dock at its ports, bringing thousands of international visitors eager to discover the country's unique charms. The recent docking of the Star Voyager at Phu My Port in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province marked a significant moment, as it carried 1,000 international passengers from the first round-trip cruise journey from Singapore to Vietnam. This event underscores Vietnam's rising appeal on the global cruise map. According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization, cruise tourism generates about 40% more revenue than air or land-based tourism, highlighting its lucrative potential. Since the beginning of 2025, a steady stream of cruise ships has graced Vietnamese harbours, enticing tourists with the country's stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage. Key locations such as Da Nang, Ha Long, Nha Trang, and Ho Chi Minh City have become hotspots for luxury liners. In February, the Celebrity Solstice brought over 3,000 visitors from Europe and the U.S. to Ho Chi Minh City and the scenic Mekong Delta. Similarly, the Adora Cruise welcomed 2,400 travellers from Guangzhou, China, in Da Nang, while the Norwegian Spirit brought 1,900 international tourists to Cam Ranh International Port in Khanh Hoa. Quang Ninh Province has emerged as a favourite, welcoming nearly 30,000 cruise tourists from Europe, Oceania, and Northeast Asia between January and May. The province expects to see 70 cruise ship visits by year-end, bringing close to 90,000 international passengers. Khanh Hoa Province is also set to receive more than 10 cruise ships, drawing around 20,000 visitors eager to experience local excursions and culture. Nguyen Thi Hanh, from the Nha Trang-Khanh Hoa Tourism Association, pointed out that the cruise sector thrives especially from January to April, the peak season. "By choosing Vietnam as a destination, cruise lines expand our tourism offerings and attract high-spending travellers," she said. "This elevates our national position on the global cruise tourism stage." Yet, the rapid growth of Vietnam's cruise industry isn’t without challenges. Tourists often face logistical issues, such as long walks to reach pick-up points and a lack of nearby entertainment or shopping facilities. Sometimes, cruise ships cannot dock due to berth unavailability, as cargo vessels take precedence, negatively affecting visitor experience. Nguyen Anh Phong, a cruise tour operator in Ho Chi Minh City, emphasised the need for dedicated cruise terminals, enhanced facilities, and luxury shopping and entertainment complexes to improve satisfaction. At a recent event celebrating the first cruise from Singapore at Phu My Port, Saigontourist's general director, Nguyen Thanh Luu, highlighted the swift recovery of both river and sea cruise tourism since 2025, with over 48,000 cruise passengers welcomed by the company so far. Luu noted that cruise tourists have significant spending power, calling for improved infrastructure, relaxed visa policies, streamlined entry and exit processes, and premium services to extend visitors’ stay and spending. Tourism experts agree that coastal areas should broaden their marine tourism offerings to align with sustainable development goals. They advocate for creating exclusive tourism products, establishing luxury shopping centres, and upgrading accommodations to five- and six-star standards. Vietnam welcomed a total of 9.2 million international tourists in the first five months of 2025, a 21% increase year-on-year, with over 600,000 of those being cruise arrivals. Key markets include Russia, the Philippines, and India, with emerging interest from Hungary, Turkey, and Poland. Looking ahead, forecasts from the World Tourism Organization suggest a shift in cruise tourism towards Asia by 2030. Within Vietnam’s marine economic development strategy through 2030, with a vision to 2045, marine tourism and services have been prioritised as a crucial sector for breakthrough development, ensuring Vietnam continues to thrive in the global tourism arena.
