All overstayers flushed out by month's end, immigration corruption over - Big Joke

Thailand's super cop "Big Joke" has declared an end to corrupt practices at immigration offices and the deputy chief of police has said that the target for overstayers still in the kingdom by the end of November is "zero".

Deputy chief Gen Srivara Ransibrahmanakul and newly appointed immigration chief Maj-Gen Surachate "Big Joke" Hakparn were speaking to reporters after a meeting at immigration HQ on Tuesday.

Srivara pledged that delays at airports and border crossings were a thing of the past. Officers must provide a fast and efficient service to those coming and leaving Thailand.

But he cautioned immigration officers to be on their guard to let no one in who might cause trouble. He cited the example of the Erawan bombing in Bangkok as an error in the past saying that the location of visitors must be double-checked.

He said that previously there were 100,000 people on overstay. Of these just 500 are left, reported Komchadluek.

These will all be flushed out by the end of November, he guaranteed.

Meanwhile a smiling Big Joke, beside the deputy chief but clearly the darling of the media and public at this point, spoke of an end to corruption regarding visa on arrival and during visa extensions.

This will come as welcome news to expats in the kingdom.

Since his appointment last month visa officers had been obliged to "eat vegetarian" he said.

This was a clear reference to corrupt practices of demanding tea money and gorging on tourists and expats being a thing of the past.

Srivara said that the implementation of new technology may cause some delays but would be sorted soon.

A week ago he said he would arrest 7,000 more by the end of this month. News on it suggests he is still way short of that mark. I also haven't seen reports of 99,500 over-stayers caught so far. Sounds

    Seriously?

  • So the Joke is going to stop immigration corruption. From now on anybody wanting a resident cert will get it free, and not pay the 500 baht demanded, absolute BS.

Sounds like another story with numbers and facts plucked right out of thin air, and with promises worth zero.

You heard it here first.

I know of a few people who I'm sure are on overstay. I'd bet my house that they will still be pottering about come the end of November.

Are they expecting a new influx?

We were told they would all be out by end of October a few days ago...

However, the mood music has clearly had an effect on a number of expats declaring on this forum that they are seeking elsewhere to stay. It might end up as so much hot air for a large number but the trend may still point down.

Bet 6 x A4 sheets of photocopying will still cost 200 baht with no receipt given or a residency letter of 500 baht no receipt given will continue.

I am starting to wonder if he is a bit soft in the head. Corruption is a way of life for these people, yet he thinks he can make it all go away, just like that? Big joke is a very appropriate name.

not true at all, the corrupt immigration officers still refuses to do their job

I guess we're ignoring the hundreds of thousands of ASEAN irregular migrants then?

This statement has nothing to do with actual facts and everything to do with stamping his authority on the people directly under him, the provincial immigration chiefs. Once you understand this, the pronouncement, which at first seems ridiculous boastful nonsense, makes perfect sense.

Now that all the overstays are gone and all the corruption at Immigration is over with this poor guy will be out of a job soon?

If any one is a overstayer I bet they are keeping a low profile round town and where they live.for awhile longer anyway

As Thais go - and certainly Thai cops - this guy's starting to pull up carrots. Any more where he came from, I wonder?

OH my where did they get approx 3,170 aircraft ( allowing 300 empty seats per aircraft) in a hurry to pack them off home????????????????????????????? If you are going to BS do your maths first.

When he has crushed corruption and achieved these staggering numbers, will he be promoted to Minister for Tourism???

It seems that Chonburi (Jomtien) answer to this is to stop issuing them - so rather than not charging a 300baht backhander they are no longer going to provide the service

Only 500 overstayers left?  There's likely that many male overstayers along Sukhumvit Soi 4 to 19 alone.

Probably he was referring to the many unregistered workers from

neighbouring countries.
