WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump will award the 2018 Presidential Medal of Freedom to Elvis Presley, George Herman "Babe" Ruth, Jr. and five other individuals, the White House said in a statement on Saturday.

The medal is the highest civilian honor in the United States and is given annually to people who have made outstanding contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.

Trump will also award the medal to Miriam Adelson, a physician who together with her husband Sheldon Adelson, a billionaire casino magnate, is a major donor to the Republican party, Jewish causes worldwide, and medical research.

Also receiving the award next week will be Republican Senator Orrin Hatch, former Minnesota Supreme Court Justice and the first African-American to serve on that court Alan Page, the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, and former professional football player Roger Staubach.

and a professional football player

FWIW, In addition to Roger Staubach, Alan Page was also a very successful "professional football player" - 9 pro bowls, league MVP, HoF; one of the "Purple People Eaters". Staubach, a Naval academy grad, Heisman Trophy winner, served in Vietnam and went on to become a very successful real-estate magnate, while Page went on to become a jurist.

I guess I'm surprised Jim Brown wasn't included? He was in the Oval Office for the Kanye meeting last month. He has been a strong supporter of Trump, but he does have a bit of history whuppin' on the ladies, so maybe now isn't the best time for an award.

Obama in his time gave away 123 of these medals to some that now have turned out to be not so exemplary recipients and now viewed as sexual predators, Clinton, Weinstein, Weiner, and Cosby. so much for the sanctity of a medal...

Anyone can turn out to be anything , what precludes them from consideration is what they are.

Sure and they gave one to Bush for his part in the WMD 'that-never-was' slaughter of thousands.  Hip Hip Horray!

No they didn't. He was never awarded one.

Actually he was awarded one as BobBKK clearly stated.

You can find it on this link under US Presidents a long way down the list.

Try looking at my post #21 where I gave you 2 separate sources to prove that BobBKK was correct and that you are wrong.

I was trying to give bild766 a graceful way out. And I didn't notice your comment, but you could have taken advantage of that, too. But since you insist... the award was given to George H.W. Bush. Not to George W(MD) Bush.

I am no fan of Bush's tenure in the white house, and I am not here to defend his administration, but I am willing to bet that he was not awarded the medal  because of his part in the "WMD that never was".

Whether or not he deserved it is of course arguable, but he was president, and among all the bad things he did I am sure he also did some good.

I am sure he was awarded the medal because of these good things and not for the WMDs.
