"Black" isnt a swear word though .

Also , calling someone a name when you are angry doesnt make you a racist , its just means that you have a temper problem

The word 'black' should never have entered my thoughts if I was truly, not at all racist.

So the simple answer is that Thailand is one of the go-to places for white-flighters (strange as the natives tend to be brown).

You will notice that there is also a lot of resentment shown towards the brown people among whom they have chosen to dwell.

Although there may be some resentment towards Thais from Westerners , the reason isnt their skin colour .

When I nearly get run over by a motorbike , speeding at night without headlights on , going the wrong way down the road , I dont resent the motorbike driver because of where hes from , its the actions that I resent

The first bad word to enter my head is always 'c^%$', closely followed by 'tw$&'

So at least I don't appear to be a racist.

He was Black though , maybe you are racist , because you seem to think that being Black is offensive

I applaud your attitude in the example you stated of the Brit. at the barbeque, I've done similar in an upmarket restaurant in HK some years ago with a Brit who thought it was OK to behave as the same way and he was a work colleague!

Did you ask the Brit to leave because he was obnoxious or was it because of his skin colour ?

strangers being verbally abused solely on the basis of their race and generally being treated differently.

In any city in the UK , if you were to racially abuse someone , its very likely that you would get physically attacked or arrested .

"why is it then that we as a group are far more overtly racist than the people here everyone likes to bash so much?"

I encounter virtually no racist behaviour in my part of the UK.

Because in my part of the UK the racial demographic matches the national average:

About 6.9% Asian/Asian British and 3% Black/Black British.

A high percentage of Caucasian Brits in Thailand seem to come from areas in the UK that have much higher percentages of non-caucasians, which upsets them.

So the simple answer is that Thailand is one of the go-to places for white-flighters (strange as the natives tend to be brown).

Basically Thailand is (for many of a certain type of Brit) what South America used to be for Nazis on the run.

TVF is an English speaking forum.......so here they vent.

Can't say re the UK but in the US it is pretty much the opposite. Anti-imigrant sentiment is highest in locations and among populations who have little if any contact with immigrants and lowest in areas and populations which are in frequent contact with large numbers of them.

But if you have read a survey in the leftest rag, The Guardian, who am I to argue. ????

Maybe you should read The Guardian more often. There are lots of interesting articles in there.

Some articles are news with facts and only facts.

Some are opinion pieces from people which you would probably call left.

And some are opinion people from people I call right-wing. The Guardian published them (not often) to give their readers also a picture of "the other side".

All in all I think The Guardian is one of the best news sources out there.

The Nazis who fled Germany in 1945 to South America did so to avoid being prosecuted and getting the death sentence  for cause a five year World war in which 70 million people died , the Brits fleeing from the UK are doing so because its cold and expensive .

Its absurd to compare ex-pats to Nazis , and would be very offensive to the ex-pats who fought against the Nazis and risked their lives and many future ex-pats did indeed lose their life during the war and are thus unable to retire to Thailand .

You really need to think twice before accusing people of being neo Nazis

You are very good at telling other people what to do, how to run their countries, but thanks for the advice anyway, but I'll choose what to read by myself.

Obviously some people are racists and if they shout at people or treat people with disdain only because they are from a different race or religion or whatever that is bad and that is clear racism. Such bad behavior should be pointed out and criticized and hopefully people will change to the better over time.
But I think sometimes racism is mixed up with just seeing that other people are different. Here are some examples:

- Jews occupy land which does not belong to them. Is it racist to criticize them?
- Is it possible to ever rightly criticize Jews without being called a racist?
- Lots of black guys openly deal with drugs on Sukhumvit. Is it racist to point out that black guys (in that area) are relative often dealers?
- According to many articles Chinese often leave bathrooms and other areas in a big mess. If Chinese do that but many other tourists don’t do it is it allowed to point this out?
- Americans behave sometimes like they own the world and like they are the greatest people god ever created. Is it allowed to dislike them for this kind of behavior?
- It seems many Germans love beer and many are overweight. And many also like to play with young Thai girls. Is it ok to present the typical German like a fat guy with a beer in one hand and a girl in another?
- And how about Thai technicians who pretend they know all but are unable to do even minor tasks correctly. Is it allowed to point this out?
There are many more examples like this. And I think most of the time these descriptions are correct. But it seems they are not politically correct anymore. And if someone talks about Chinese behaving like pigs that person is maybe called a racist – even if he tells (statistically speaking) the truth.

May I add another one ?

Is it racist to refer to Israel and Israelis as "Jews" , considering that 20 % of Israelis are not Jews and the majority of the Worlds Jews do not live in Israel ?

Is there any other Country that you call them by that Countries Religion ? Would you refer to Saudi Arabians as the Sunnis ?

In principle you are right.

But then again I guess all the settlers are Jewish. Or are there Arab Muslims with Israeli citizenship who are settlers?

There are always people who don't look or behave like in above examples. But the point of my post is that many people make up their mind about countries and people of that country because of what they see, hear, read, etc.

What comes to our minds when we hear the name of the following countries:

Nigeria: Nigerian scams

Italy: Pizza and Pasta

Thailand: Pretty girls

But yes, there are Italians who don't eat pizza and pasta and not all girls in Thailand are pretty...

omo   you pretty well shut your mind down to learning anything new when you stereotype to this extreme, and if you're not learning anything new in this life it's probably time to check yourself out cause you're wasting space.

Can you seriously say you don't have anything in mind when you hear the words Nigeria, Thailand, USA, Israel, Saudi Arabia, to mention just a few?

I think we all have a mental picture with goes with those words.

If we are open minded then we also know that not all Nigerians are scammers, and I am sure they are even a few white people with Nigerian nationality. Obviously we should be open minded and learn more about other countries and people.

But are we all that open minded? Always? I try to be open minded and I am happy to learn. But then again when I am in a dark Sukhumvit Soi and a black guy approaches me I probably will think: He wants to sell drugs. And if I think that 3 times when I see such a guy and when it's confirmed that they want to sell drugs 3 out of 3 times then my open mind will close a little more.

But maybe one day one of those guys will surprise me...
