Inquiry launched after rescue of ailing dogs

DOZENS OF sick dogs were this week rescued from a breeding farm in Chiang Rai's Mae Sai district that allegedly kept them in poor living conditions and have been moved to Chiang Mai for medical treatment, Save The Elephants Foundation president Saengduan Chailert said on Thursday.

 

Most of the 61 dogs, who are now being temporarily kept at a separate section within the Elephant Nature Park compound in Chiang Mai's Mae Taeng district, were suffering from pneumonia and infections to various parts of their bodies, she said, adding that four dogs were so seriously sick that they had been sent to Thong Lor Animal Hospital in Sansai district.

 

Tuesday’s visit to the farm in Tambon Pong Kha and the subsequent rescue of the dogs was conducted by the foundation in collaboration with the Facebook-based "SOS Animal Thailand" community page. 

 

The latter group is now in discussions with related state agencies about whether to lodge a police complaint against the farm owner over offences under the Cruelty Prevention and Welfare of Animal Act 2014. 

 

The two groups checked on the farm, which reared 80 dogs, after they received a complaint from nearby residents that they had heard the animals yelping in agony and noticed a foul smell coming from the farm. 

 

A further 19 dogs were also seized by Mae Sai Livestock Development officials.

 

The dogs, mostly Chihuahuas, Golden Retrievers, Pekinese and Siberian Huskies, are undergoing thorough check-ups by veterinarians at the Elephant Nature Park and would be treated back to health before the foundation would help find new homes for them, she said. 

 

Dayin Petcharat, founder of SOS Animals Thailand, said the group had filed a request for a detailed inquiry into the farm’s operation licence; it was originally owned by a Thai woman who passed away and left the farm under her father's care. 

 

"We are discussing with the Livestock Development Department's Animal Welfare Division and Mae Sai authorities whether we can file a complaint as per the Cruelty Prevention and Welfare of Animal Act 2014. We are now waiting for the dogs' health results before gathering information to file the complaint," she added.

although I'm not a big soi dog fan you have to be a little cold in the heart to treat a living being like that.

The homeless are often homeless because of mental problems or drug issues (which is also a mental problem).

And as far as i know they are entitled to free medical treatment.

 

SO what is your proposal?

Do nothing about animal abuse till there are no homeless people in Thailand anymore?

And who do you think is more helpless? These dogs or homeless people? Inasmuch as I empathize with the plights of homeless people, suggesting this situation as being similar is simply ignorant of reality. I agree Bob.

the comment was about not being a dog fan period, obviously they were used for breeding cause they weren't in the street chewing up little girls or giving people rabies.

Who's doing nothing? They were discovered and now something is being done. Whereas the mentally ill or impoverished can live on the street for years ignored, yea a great f****** society we live in.

And <deleted> is a Siberian Husky or Golden Retriever doing in Thailand?

It was bad enough to see a St. Bernard years ago in Phitsanoluk.

Certain types of dogs do not belong in 30+C heat & humidity!

What homeless? The only homeless I have ever seen are either alcoholics or mentally ill - mostly schizophrenic who don't take their meds and choose to live that way.

Maybe the people and I use this term very loosely , who are responsible for this inhumane treatment of these poor animals should be subjected to the same treatment for a year or 2
