Forget a guard dog - Phitsanulok man keeps the family safe with pet crocodile

Sanook reported on the story of a Phitsanulok man who keeps a 20 year old crocodile as a pet.

"Jao Thong" has the run of the house even going up and down the stairs to find its favorite resting places.

The croc is docile and has never harmed anyone. But he would give burglars a nasty shock if they were ever foolish enough to try to steal at the house.

Thong is considered a part of the family - the third "son" of its owner.

He is Kanathip Nathip, 53, who is something of a local celebrity in the Wat Phan Pee community and is known by the name of "Daeng Phan Pee" (Red of a Thousand Years).

He explained that twenty years ago he took his kids to a crocodile farm in Nakorn Sawan and they loved the beasts. So he bought two - one called Ngern and one called Thong (Silver and Gold).

Ngern was unsuitable as a pet and still lives in the pond on the property but Thong lives in the house.

Kanathip said that the family don't normally touch Thong though they can get away with stroking his tail.

Isn't it illegal to keep crocodiles as pets?  Thought you had to have licences and documents etc.

They probably did have, but the crocodile ate them all.

Why is he electric like an Eel .. sort of a shock croc' ..

Funny , I would think the croc could get a free human meal inside the house, at night when the owner is sleeping ?

Forget the croc. I feel amply protected after I put these signs in front of my home:
