"Digital Age!": No longer necessary to have a Thai driving license with you from January

If you see a new vehicle or a newly purchased second hand vehicle, the chances are that the paper work is done.

But the plates take some time to be delivered. They drive the car, bikes or scoots with the paperwork but not the plates.

Not condoning. This is a tiny poor country with 90 millions. Give them some slack with the admin details.

They are mostly motobikes and also not looking new. For myself it took about a week to get the new plates and for the car a red plate and 3 weeks later the normal one.

My neighbour has a red plate now but it's unreadable....how about that one?

Also i every day see very crappy cars used for construction who don't have any plates and sure are not roadworthy. They also drive on the main roads.

And 90 million is sure not a small country.

I stand by my post. I talked about a lot of new cars and recently purchased cars. And the fact they do not have plates.

And 90 million living in this tiny piece of earth means a huge population living in a small country.

????‍♂️ - welcome monday, and with so much humour from the start :coffee1:

Oh dear- positive action and attempts at progress meets with disapproval from Thaigeezers yet again.  The first page of this thread is just chock full of negativity and sarcasm.

I saw some berk comment in the BP that it wouldn't go down well in Canada when he tried to rent a car. The dipstick clearly didn't realise that this is in ADDITION to the current driving licence.

Some people just seize on any occasion to knock progress (and knock a lack of progress as well!).

Personally I see this as a great idea should I forget to carry my licence on occasion.

The Department of Land Transport proudly announced yet more technological innovations on Saturday.

I'm afraid about technological innovations in Thailand.

i'd rather that motorists here just bring their wits about them than a driver's license - physical or digital

60 years of carrying my licence now i've got to kick the habit. ( It lives in my wallet and i go nowhere without money, Guess i can handle the extra weight of a plastic card. )

Exactly, and i do forget my cellphone when it's on the charger...It also can run out of battery so the app wouldn't work at all.

"This is a tiny poor country with 90 millions"

I think you mean Vietnam, 95.5 m ? Thailand 69+ million

I sense a business opportunity for the BIB. Sorry, we don't have a scanner at this checkpoint. Don't have your physical licence with you? 500 baht fine for farang. Kopkhun Krap.

I see the convenience here, most Thai drivers drive with their phones in their hands, not their driver's licenses.

Unless 25 million Thais were born in the past month that I am unaware of, the population is 65 million!

I hadn't realised carrying one's licence was such a chore.

Thailand 4.0 !

If they include lot of security documents uploaded into it, it would be great.

But make sure your mobile run out of battery, or internet is still OK.

Time to put my QR Code tattoo!

So Now you have to unlock your phone and hand it to police ?

Yea I wont be installing this app

Good idea, But!

No doubt the RTP will simply take the phone and probably charge a much higher fine in order for the individual to retrieve their phone and sure as eggs are eggs, farang will be charge a much higher fine as is the usual victimization and racisium demonstrated by most RTP toward farang especially in such hot spots as Pattaya!

When I was fined recently, I was fined the same amount as Thais. No racism at all. Everyone was friendly. Perhaps what you claim is racism is a misperception brought about by a difficulty to communicate - a language barrier so to speak.

Racism? From Pattaya Police??

More than 10 years that I drive my bike in and around Pattaya.

I got stopped many times for documents-control,

but along with many Thai drivers,

and never got any fine.

Thank you Pattaya Police

Yeah, i'm sure the guys with Honda Waves modified with extra wheels in order to push metal cages with junk and have CDs for headlights have the apps on their smart phones.

I think it’s an excellent innovation but now need to hear from police if they wouod accept it.

One thing I wonder at: No Thai I know leaves their phone unlocked, how will anyone be able to unlock the phone with the pin code while the owner is unconscious and bleeding on the road/in his/her vehicle....

a qr code?. just show someone elses then... all thais look a like. lol

this seems really not thought out in my opinion. If it aint broke dont fix it is what i say....

I understand why many thai people use phone while driving!!! It’s because they are finding their driving license!!!

before i think they sharing their lunch or dinner in Facebook!

Thank you for actually adding a comment with USEFUL information.

I suspect the QR code means on the drivers smartphone on a new app, rather than a QR code on the actual plastic license.

That is because more Thai drivers have a phone than have a driving licence.

..no doubt the app. will have a GPS location part to it..no escaping Bbrother.

in the unlikely case of an accident.

Yes, very unlikely :cheesy:

What planet are they on ?

Number 1 or Number 2 in the world for Road Traffic Deaths,

Nice PR stunt for  the digital age...but try as a (awful????) farang going through the maze of red tape to get a Thai driving licence and the paperwor and hassles, will be more similar to the dark prehistoric ages..

Solly mr officeer, no more battely,

My DL renewed last year has a QR code.

I scanned it and get some text that contains no recognizable stuff.

Must be "coded".
