Chiang Mai overtakes Bangkok as New Year destination: website

By The Nation

Tokyo, Paris and New York City are the top destinations to bring in 2019, according to Agoda, an online travel agent.

Tokyo’s appeal continues with concerts, parades and light shows on offer.

For Thais, Chiang Mai takes over Bangkok’s crown for the top Thai destination. Japan is the most popular international destination with Tokyo jumping from seventh place last year to third and Osaka making a first appearance in this year’s top 10.

Taiwan is increasingly on the map as a year-end destination for Thai travellers, with Taipei making its first appearance in the top 10.

Considering Bangkok has had the life sucked out of it by the boys in green,  who would go there?.  It use to be a great town.  Now it is a grimy version of Singapore.

What a curious headline! Any holiday sees thousands if not  multiple thousands  depart BKK. Chiang Mai would  be  only one of  many destinations. Perhaps the intent was  to say "tourist" destination.?

Nice plug  for Chiang Mai is about all I  find in the item.

Depends on what somebody is looking for.

New year is the time when you see the least people in Bangkok (Song Khran might be similar, but my personal feeling said at new year you see even less people), because many Thais are heading home to their villages. So many places are empty, food stalls closed and so on. Bangkok on new year is definitely not the "typical" Bangkok and if somebody wants to experience the typical Bangkok i would recommend to choose another date to go there.
