U.S. House passes bills that would end government shutdown, without wall funds

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives, where Democrats now hold a majority, approved legislation on Thursday to end a partial government shutdown that began nearly two weeks ago at several federal agencies and fund the Department of Homeland Security through Feb. 8.

 

Under the bills, the departments of State, Commerce, Agriculture, Labor, Treasury and other agencies would be funded through Sept. 30, the end of the current fiscal year.

 

Hours before the vote, the White House said advisers to President Donald Trump would recommend that he veto the measure if Congress passed it without any additional money for Trump's proposed wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Trump is just like a spoiled brat who, if can't have things his way throws a tantrum.

 

The Democrats have made a start on ending the government shut down.

 

If the Republicans in the Senate and Trump turn it down, they they will share the blame and when the next election comes around many familiar Republican faces will be missing. including that of Trump.

It's DOA on arrival to the senate and the dems knew that. Good or bad right or wrong with out attacking me for stating the obvious... the fact is Trump is done if he caves in. 

 

The dems know they are engaging in a useless exercise here. This is no longer about a wall.

If Trump is done if the wall doesn't happen how can that be a useless exercise for the Dems???

Well he will not cave in for starters. Prolonging the shut down is as risky for the dems as it is for Trump. it could be argued that as everybody says Trump is so stupid that why wouldn't the dems want to run against him? 

 

Trump will hold out along as he can. If he ends up finished that's it but if it goes on long enough there will also be a huge amount of damage also done to the democrats. The country is divided for every person that blames Trump there will be one that blames the dems. 

 

The dems should give trump the lousy 3 billion or whatever compromise is offered. Getting rid of Trump might be a  short term gain if you destroy your entire party to do it. To get Trump out the dems will have to be willing to go over the brink and I don't think they have the political balls to carry on as long.

There is a rational compromise that is possible but it doesn't satisfy the "trump" fans.

 

Label it a border security package. 

Continue to do repairs/enhancements to existing walls and fences (mostly done anyway). Specify in detail specific new sections for new walls or fences justified by their tactical benefits.

Enhance / improve all other security measures -- technology, manpower, etc.

 

There is massive bipartisan support for rational border security. There is no majority support for the "great" wall of "trump" covering the entire southern border. There never was. There never will be. It will never happen. 

 

Deal with it.

Standing up to this disgrace of a president could destroy the Dems -how on earth do you figure that? On the contrary, that's something they all can unite around.

Anyway, let's hope the release of Mueller's report makes all this purely an academic exercise.

If I am so off the dems should pray Trump survives he should be easy enough to beat. However i remember them saying they would have a landslide against Dubya and getting beat twice.

 

Outside of the most liberal urban centers in the country Trump holds his own. Maybe if the dems can get a great turn out it isn't equal but last time the vote was close. So as far as people who are politically active the numbers are  much closer to 50/50 than you like to  admit. 

 

If you count how many people will want one democrat over the other and that division it is even closer.

I read through the previous posts and am amazed that so many uninformed comments have appeared so freely and quickly.

This won't get through the senate, Republican senators aren't even going to read it.

The wall is being built right now by the military, this is a national defence issue. Efforts were intensified today.

The only reason the Dems oppose this "wall" is to get Trump out of power, they want to get back to business as usual, illegal voters casting illegal votes and all the corruption that hoes along with that kind of mentality.

As far as I can see, the only policy of the Dems is "get Trump" they can't understand why Americans got sick of the "always did it this way" politicians. I can't think of anything sensible that they are proposing apart from free education, free health care, open borders.. things that worked out so well in Europe.

Withdrawing from foreign wars, making a move in N. Korea, rooting out paedophilia, recognising that Russia isn't the biggest enemy of the civilised world... ignore all that, just follow what the MSM tells you.

The public isn't as stupid or ignorant as the Dems presume them to be. Just as they understood very well what the Dems were trying to do in the Kavanaugh hearings, so they understand what is going on now. They won't win the next election by saying what they don't like and don't want.

No. Donald announced to Nancy and Chuck, live on TV, that if there was a shutdown, he would be happy to take the blame, 100%. Well there is a shutdown and Donald owns it....100%.

It amazes me that so many idiots are free with their mindless drivel but who have never served their country (USA) in any capacity other then sliding off their bar stool and expressing opinions that have no meaning to the bulk of US citizenry. Although I reside in Thailand, I have never failed to cast my vote in US Federal elections. I wonder if this is true of the big mouths I see in these columns.
