Authorities rounded up 503 foreigners for overstaying their visas, illegally entering Thailand and other crimes during simultaneous searches at 217 locations around the country early Friday.

Immigration Police Bureau deputy chief Pol Maj-General Itthipol Itthisarnronnachai held a 1am press conference in front of Bangkok’s Street Ratchadapisek mall to say it was part of the government’s crackdown on transnational scammers, card skimmers and drug traffickers, as well as foreigners breaking immigration laws.

The searches took place at locations including four schools, 73 private firms and shops, six service establishments and 50 hotels and hostels, he said.

Four Iranians, three Lao, two Russians and an American, an Indian, a Chinese and a Mongolian were charged with overstaying their visas.

Ninety-four Lao, 86 Myanmar nationals, 68 Cambodians, two Vietnamese and an Indian and a South Korean were charged with entering the country illegally.

Itthipol did not elaborate on the nature of the charges filed against 121 Thais, 50 Cambodians, 40 people from Myanmar, six Lao, six Vietnamese, three Indians, two Filipinos, two Chinese, two Australians, two Russians and a Briton, a South Korean, a Greek and a German.

He said 43 separate operations in the clampdown, including Friday’s, had resulted in the arrest of 6,971 foreigners.

Big Joke, I thought you said there were no more overstays? So now it is deputy chief Pol Maj-General Itthipol Itthisarnronnachai fronting the ludicrous-hour press conferences? Why, because you finally realised how your own joke made you look stupid, and you can't explain how there are, out of a sudden, 500 more overstayers? Also missing is the ubiquitous banner featuring the officer-in-charge in a GQ-pose.

Until election is over, this non-sense will go on. Since there are no more enemies left in the country, now the poor foreign labors are portrayed as enemies of the country.

This will not help the country, as no Thai's would work for 7000 baht a month as these poor migrant slaves can work from 8AM to 8PM in most places.

Let's see...

Other than in this picture which says, "Overstay 500 cases" does the article state that their were anymore than 13 cases of "Overstay" and a whole lot of "Illegal Entry".  Based on the article, 'overstay' isn't much of a problem; 'illegal entry' is a huge problem.  That banner should say, "Illegal Entry 490 ราย" which would be accurate.  I wonder what the program is stressing 'overstay' as opposed to the real problem.
