A leading environmentalist in Prajuab Khiri Khan has responded to suggestions that Hua Hin and Pranburi have been hit by PM2.5 smog particles.

She said it's not true - what people are worried about is just vapor coming off the sea.

Jirat Pranprasit said that many tourism operators had contacted her in a panic saying that smart phone apps showed hazardous levels of particulate matter in the area.

She said this was not true.

She accepted that factories and sugar cane burning in the area was being monitored.

But the reason for the haze - and the confusion - was simply vapor coming off the sea.

Trying to read the original story using Google's built-in Thai-to-English facility is tricky. It doesn't appear to provide any tangible evidence other than general assertions to refute the claims of pollution picked up by smartphone apps.

No facts and figures or measurements are offered to show Hua Hin's air is healthy. And, Intriguingly, the final paragraph reads: "While there was no examination (?) there was an increase in the number of skin lesions, rashes or respiratory disorders".

Maybe something got lost in translation.

I've got an air purifier at home and the amount of air particles it's been detecting for the last couple of weeks has been really high. It started dropping back down again yesterday, though.
