There is a post on Facebook that police is combing through all On Nut condos looking for foreigners renting short term, working without work permit, overstayers...etc.

Anyone who lives in the area can confirm this?

i live in an apartment bldg btwn emporium and terminal 21.  two weeks ago, immigration police asked the owner of the bldg to provide a copy of the passport and permission to stay stamp of all foreigners staying in the bldg.  i've been here 10 yrs and that was the first time i was asked for my passport, other than the day of the initial rental.

It should not be hard to find the illegal ones since AirB&B and other hotel sites clearly offer The Base Sukhumvit 77 rooms for daily rental as well as other condos in the area. Juristic persons ignore these visitors and allow them full access in facilities.

according to the owner of my building they are supposed to provide this information to the police on an ongoing basis - so the police should have this information already?

Can't confirm it but it can only be something to be thankful for, let's hope they can stop the illegals.

i think they are supposed to report who is staying there, name and passport number.  i'm not so sure about reporting  the permitted to stay date.  the mgr of my bldg told me to bring my passport to her again once i get my next annual extension (coming up in a few months) so she can report the new permitted to stay date.  what have you provided to your landlord during the time you have been in residence there ?

as far as i know, the immigration police can take the name and passport number and then look in their computer to see the permitted to stay date.  not sure why they need the apt mgr to provide them with it.  my guess is they don't want to have to look in the computer and will just review the info provided by the landlords.  so the new process is name, passport number, AND permitted to stay date.

i'm certainly in favor of the checks.  get the overstayers out.

This posting seems to be significantly off-topic, and more a rant against short term rentals than the actual issue at hand.

one of the illegals soi 70 and up could be your impeccably dressed Japanese Manager neighbour (who could turn out to be Yakuza as many other J. in that area...)

"...for foreigners renting short term,..."  Looks perfectly on topic to me.

When did renting "short term" become a crime?

When the owner doesn't file a TM30 for every new set of "guests", nor possess a hotel licence, nor declare the income to the tax department.

Booked into a hotel overnight and the one thing i noticed was that they paid a great deal of time writing down my expiry date n the paperwork.  I have no problem with them doing this But then again I am legally here.  To me, it is not a bad thing to be checking for people that are overstaying or have abused the system.  The sooner they resolve these issues the sooner they can then start to look after those of us that are here legally.

Since the "Hotel Law" was published years ago it has been illegal to rent condo rooms for less than 30 days unless the owners have a Hotel License. Landlords are the target but renters will pay a price also.

Still numerous listing on airbnb for condos in my building. Two large signs in the lobby saying it is not allowed, yet very clearly people coming and going on short rentals.

A truly impossible law to try and enforce.

I'm sure he could but if you actually knew anything about the Japanese expat population you'd know that your suggestion is even more likely to be wrong.

Thai Immigration warned me to stay away from Cambodians when I lived in Klong Yai and when I moved to Trat City they warned me to stay away from Falongs. They know what's going on. I've lived here long enough to know an undercover Immigration Officer when I talk to one, there English is pretty good. They slip up when they won't join me for lunch or a beer. They don't seem to be a problem … the problem is the Falongs trying to scam the Falongs tourist. This is my take … or rather what I see with my eyes. I'm sure everyone has different experiences

likewise, my apartment owner tells foreigners to let her know of any change in visa, which i do, so she can advise the police. i guess if the police are receiving up to date information from apartment owners, and they have a half decent computer system, they dont need to go to check.

I don't see how Immigration can force the management office in a condo to report the e.g. entry details of an condo unit occupier. Likewise I don't see what the management office could do when/if the occupier refuses to provide that information.

An apartment is a different situation. In that case the management office is the landlord and is therefore obligated to report under section 38 of the Immigration Act.

Good they are doing this.

I bet those in the Oh Nuts area definitely fit the profile.

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Good, I hope they get them, they are the real reason why genuine tourists, and retirees are treated so badly, and are forced to jump through so many hoops by the Thai government.

How very third reich of them.

Yes, requiring people to be in the country legally is the same as rounding people up and killing them.

You must be a right-winger..

Most condo sales agreements require buyer comply with condo rules and most condo rules require owner to report occupants (for security reasons) and supply a copy of ID or passport. In order to get access occupants usually need an entry card or code furnished by the Juristic Person and that requires registering that occupant. Some landlords evade this by giving occupants the landlord's access card/code which is a violation of condo rules. Story short, the Juristic Person is responsible for landlord compliance and are responsible to take action to ensure safety and security for all occupants as well as compliance with the law.

Requiring ID from an occupier is reasonable. But this thread is talking about reporting Immigration status e.g. providing the management office with updated copies of permission to stay stamps etc.

Personally I would not cooperate with this.

Something may have changed in recent months - when I renewed my yearly contract about five months ago I was asked by the juristic office for a copy of my visa (something I've never been asked to show previously). Actually, knowing the office has it makes me more comfortable that they'd vouch for me and take care of it at reception if the police were doing the rounds.

An awful lot of dodgy cheap-charlie 20,000-baht-a-month-earning, cheap-polyester-suit-wearing "English teachers" living (existing?) in On Nut and making money on the side with various illicit activities. In their home countries, they'd probably be locked up. Send them back, I say! BKK is definitively NOT a place for these cheap charlies of dubious morals and source of income any more...
