Things Not to Do If Your Car Has Auto Transmission

In certain countries having an automatic transmission for your car is the most popular option. For instance, in the U.S.A and Thailand there are far more vehicles on the road with automatic transmissions than manual.

However, if you are a novice automatic transmission driver, there are scenarios that can damage its operation and there are things you can do that will help the automatic transmission to perform better.

If you want to try something different and change your vehicle to one with an automatic transmission, contact Roojai.com or get a personalised quote for your insurance.

When Parked do not Leave Lever in D Position

When stopped in traffic for a lengthy period or parked, take the transmission out of the Drive position and move it to either Neutral or Park and then make sure the handbrake is engaged. If you continue to leave it in the Drive position when the vehicle is not moving, it will add general wear and tear to the transmission in particular, the O Ring, as this will shorten its life. By doing this to the vehicle, it will also prevent accidental release and possible accidents.

Auto Position or Manual?

Automatic gearboxes have an M position, which stands for manual mode. But there is no clutch to shift gears and therefore it does not respond in the same way as a manual transmission.

Be careful not to assume that the high-speed cycle means that you can shift gears down when travelling at high speeds as it does not. In fact, it is not related to speed at all and treating it as such can lead to damage.

Only Use 1 or L when Absolutely Necessary

The use of position 1 or L on the automatic transmission is designed when more torque is required. Situations like a ramp or mud might call for this. Never use either position when driving for a long period of time.

The General Driving with an Automatic Transmission

If you have never driven a car with an automatic transmission before then take care at first not to treat it as a manual vehicle. For instance, to chip down or change to a lower gear for immediate power may not give you the reaction you would normally expect with a manual transmission.

Some vehicles respond quicker than others so get to know your car first before you try new techniques, or you may cause an accident.

Auto Boxes Need Regular Maintenance

Just like any other part of a car, automatic transmissions need regular maintenance. Change the gear oil on a regular basis according to the manufacturer's guidelines. If you do not, small pieces of metal can accumulate in the housing and cause damage.

If you need to repair or swap an automatic transmission, then this can prove very expensive and by not ensuring it is properly maintained you might be in conflict with the manufacturer’s warranty.

Driving a car with an automatic transmission can be a great deal of fun as long as you look after it and learn exactly how to drive it correctly.

May I add that auto trans fluid temperature is the key to longevity. If the fluid gets over heated it will take it's toll on an auto and shorten it's life.

My ol' Vigo auto had a dash warning light pointing out if the fluid was out of it's temp range, do not ignore it in the rare occasion it may come on.

Autos I fooled with have an internal fluid filter to trap naughty stuff in it's closed environment, I have no idea about modern autos and an internal filter...

Auto Oil/fluid coolers are present..But, if you go beyond that cooling capacity then things may go a bit pear shaped...

@fredob43 It's marked on the top headline with a red 'Advertorial' badge, which is standard procedure for online press when a story is sponsored or paid content. Easiest thing is to just move on when you see that. It's saved many a man, self included, from spilling his beer :).

Would be better if the red thing was a bit larger please, for us old 'uns with dodgy mincers.

You cannot leave a Vigo/Tuna parked in the D position, the ignition key will not come out.

And the M position for Manual....I can't find it.

the advert has only lightly skimmed over the top of whatever 'facts' they decided to promote!

The car when parked, is only Parkde when it is in Park

Thier skimming missed the general experts' idea that the situation really refers to when one is 'Stopped' i.e. at the Traffic lights/ Railway Crossings when a loon train is shovelling through... etc etc

the real problem of leaving your car languishing by the side of the road, and not in Park;

 - is that you are Totally relying upon the HandBrake to do all the work!

on the other side; there's probably just as much alternative wear going on; with the Bands
 - everytime one is Changing the Selections back'n'forth between Park/Drive/everse/ neutral/Drive/Park,...
each time thereis that little bit of torture going on, repeatedly...

"The real problem" are people who are allowed to drive even if they don't understand that.

Nowadays - at least in Europe - many of the auto transmissions are of the twin clutch type, no ATM fluids, torque converters etc.

Completely different in construction and characteristics from the transmissions described - in a very shallow way - in the OP Advertorial.........

different yes! which is why the Advert doesn't refer to those DSGs, Twin Clutch Manuals (or whichever term relates to in a readers' respective country)

If you have a ploblem about ads then go to the complaint forum, this is the motoring forum where this thread is to help others, yet you make a song and dance because an insurance broker has been mentioned..Good grief man...????

PS. My post count has nothing to do with this topic...Perhaps it is you who needs a beer eh...☺️

No one posts in the Nakerswan Section either,  everyone got bored with the Me, Me, I, I, poster. Went flat here when Warpspeed  and a couple of others left. Only TA and his V8 ,Pressure Gauges n Weego kept it going with a bit of Humour.:partytime2:

what many an Auto driver might not realise,

is that it is cheaper to repair/replace an abused set of brakepads,

than to restore a tortured Auto.

for example; my #1 DoNot; is all the following combined:

Never Select D if you are moving Backwards

Never Select R if you are still moving Forward

Never Select P if you are Moving.

I am not an expert on AT transmissions... but I am sure it has more than 1 O ring. Why not Google and let us know.
