Water police were notified yesterday after fishermen found a dead man floating in the sea four nautical miles off Hua Hin.

The man - who had tattoos on both the left and right shoulders - was decomposing and had been dead about five days.

He was taken to Hua Hin ferry terminal then to Hua Hin Hospital for autopsy.

Police are keeping an open mind about what happened to him.

Missing persons' lists are being studied.

5 days?  Rather exact considering that a body only pops up after 3 or 4 days in warm salt water. Once surfaced, it attracts scavenger bird and fish alike who will chew off the  soft tissue. After a few days that's it, and the chemical destruction combined with soaking is such that the body starts to  break apart  under normal wave action, even in the relatively calm water. Once the body starts disintegrating, the  bloated organs (lungs, stomach, bladder) leak and  the body loses buoyancy and the body turns to mush. The bones  fall off and down they go after 10-14 days. If they are certain it's 5 days, then that's a body in fairly decent shape so they can get a photo for identification purposes,  minus the eyes.
