Where and How to Buy a Clunker

Featured Replies

So lets say I need a car, 1600 cc minimum, small small small size, I want to keep my entire cost to 100K. Suggestions? Craigs list? Dealers?

How long can I drive on an International.

How much is insurance.

I assume that the best cars to get here are Toyotas?

Does anyone know how much it would cost to get a car delivered from BKK to Koh Chang?

Depends what aspect you're considering, I suppose, but I wouldn't assume anything when it comes to clunkers, nothing much wrong with other makes either.

i would be very cautious getting a used car here given the lack of maintenance, odometer rollbacks etc.  good luck!

Most "small small small" cars are under 1600cc so you are limiting your choices. Facebook market place or local buy/sell groups a good place to look. More than a 90 day stay you are supposed to get a Thai license. Insurance would depend if you want full or just just 3rd party etc.

Nissan March are usually at the cheaper end, but also cheap to repair.

Duh. Really? ????

I need an island rig. Depending on where I end up staying I might drive a max of 100km a week.

Another countries DL with IDP the consensus is 90 days although there are some who disagree.

Any Falang who drives a scooter in Koh Chang is nuts, unless you are a savagely professional rider.

OP, as you quote "clunker" then the Thai motoring world is your Oyster..Go for it, use Glooogle to sort payout stuff....????

Have you ever bought a used car in Thailand?  Who (apart from you) says that they are not maintained/serviced?  Is that and clocking odometers a particularly Thai think that you wouldn't have to worry about elsewhere?

Do you live here...?

None of your business and irrelevant to my point but yes, I do and I've bought a number of used cars here with no problems.

The poster to whom I directed my question has gone very quiet, I wonder what used car experience he has here or whether he was just mouthing-off in the typical Thaivisa poster Thai-bashing manner?

I havent bought a car here, and if I do, it will be like buying a car in the USA 40 years ago.

You'll have to take your chances when buying a clunker.  The last honest car salesman passed away two years ago.  RIP John Clarke.

Thank you for calling me nuts. I drove on a scooter in Koh Chang multiple times. Not always fun, the hills took some getting used too. I did not drive too much at night.

That paintwork will buff out, and the tyres are only flat on the bottom.
