Historical heart of Bangkok "not an appropriate place for prostitution"

Thai officials are determined to stop street walking prostitution in the heart of Bangkok's historical "Ratanakosin Island " area.

They said that it is not appropriate to have prostitution in such an area and it is damaging for the image of Thailand.

BMA officials and other interested groups led by Phaitoon Khamparat inspected the area known as "Klong Lot" or Sakae Lane near the Rattanakosin Hotel.

For years the area has been known for prostitution, begging and homelessness.

Phaitoon struck a conciliatory tone in telling the press that the reasons for prostitution were many - such factors as the state of the economy, societal pressures, poverty and unemployment all came into the equation.

But he wanted to advise the women selling themselves there that this is not an appropriate area for such activity.

The implication was clear - prostitution puts people off visiting this historical area and tourists wouldn't like it.

He has suggested a three pronged approach to solving the problem. Firstly the women are to be persuaded to go elsewhere. Secondly the area should be modified and equipped with CCTV.

Thirdly other more savory activities should be introduced into the area to encourage visitors to come.

Slightly off topic,

"Because the sex market trades with foreigners, the spread of HIV is a big concern for the Thai government"

Those dirty foreigners, no Thai would ever spread HIV!

Behind the royal hotel are lots of love hotels outside of which are many not so lovely girls , it more a aging last chance saloon type of girl catering to Thai men

Perhaps Klong Lot attracts a more rewarding and up-market class of customer for the prostitutes than the more visible and vibrant and competitive downtown Nana, the true hub of Bangkok's prostitution.

They conveniently sprout their belief that prostitution damages the image of Thailand while ignoring the tourism it creates and the money it brings as one of Thailand's biggest unofficially recognised service industries.

Not to forget the additional income it provides to the RTP who openly and greedily work the fringes of the profession.

He refused to suggest a more appropriate area though.

Someone needs to take off their rose-tinted specs and have a dose of reality:

"Of the 26.74 million visitors recorded by TAT in 2013, 11.23 million were men suspected by NGOs to have come to Thailand explicitly to engage in prostitution"

Also quotes an estimated 30,000 sex workers!!

Slightly low one thinks or missing a few 00's

The first major epidemic of HIV,  came from the north, in the 1970/80s, not from Western sexpats.

What amazes me is a few days ago I posted a topic. In that I made a post that referred to prostitution. That post and some replies were deleted and then the topic closed for further comment and now a WHOLE topic on it. At least be consistent, but hey.......TiT.

Oh yes , it really has not helped Pattayas image at all. So many horny men put off visiting.

Anyway , the females around Klong Lot are mostly of the meat and two veg variety. Those that are not would look good on a Walking Dead set.

What's damaging to Thailand is highway carnage, bad air quality, unsanitary water, unreliable power, trash everywhere, corruption,

Only for expats. Tourists couldn't care less, they'd actually consider it exotic.

Thanks for the heads up guys.

Ditto. Trip report. This calls for investigation. I was just there a week or so ago during the day and there are lots of dumpsters.

By all means go and take a look at the tuk tuks drivers equivalent of Pat Pong / Soi 6 , whatever ......But before contemplating a Santa Klaus donation ( emptying your sack up a vacant chimney ) make sure you are stone cold sober otherwise you may live to be eternally embarresed by your kirking spirit of boldly going

where no savvy person has gone before.
