Road trip Udon / Songkran Join us?

Featured Replies

HI we are 2 big bikes going from Pattaya to Udon area for Songkran . . start 11 April go back 18 April . . . .

We looking for more drivers to join us. .  Welcome to contact me.

We going one Boulevard suzuki and a Yamaha Roadstar

i did Hua Hin to Korat during Songkran in 2016 on my Versys 650 with a Thai girl on the back. (had to add the girl to the story) :clap2:

I know you will be coming from a slightly different direction, but highway 2 was gridlocked the whole way. Even on a bike, sitting for long periods to get around crazy mad max traffic jams.

i would do it again but be forewarned.

Take the 331 to 304 to Korat, then onto 2 - be aware that the road from Korat to KK is one of the most boring drives in Thailand.

Udon is OK best bar girls I've seen in a long time puts Pattaya to shame IMO ,you don't have to go  main routes,  many roads are good do a planned route away from  highways,  I and my fellow m/c pal did.

Are you sure it's a good idea to make such a trip over Songkran?

Good luck! You will need it.

Yep.

Rather them than me.

Certainly April the 11th is an irelevent date as regards safety as the kids with buckets

will be already be in full swing in towns and villages.

IMO, 11/4-18/4 is THE MOST DANGEROUS TIME OF THE YEAR to be driving let alone riding.

I avoid it like a plague.

I can nip down the local village on a Wave and get an expected soaking, but the big bikes stay cosseted well away from any road.

Doubt you'll have many, if any takers.....

Don't get me wrong, i like Sonkran, but not for touring on a large motorcycle.

Edit;

Re the headline - "you have got to be f###ing joking!"...

I’m planning to start a trip south to north straight after songran wouldn’t catch me riding any distance during songran,I have found a lot of the expats here with proper jobs always try to plan rides over songran as its the only time they get time off...some guys I know in  bkk wanted to do a ride bkk to Chiang Mai at start of songran last year..it’s definately not for me

I did the Chang Mai / Mae Hong Song route one year before Songkran after having the Harley accompany me on the night train from Bangkok

Unfortunately no one tells the little kids up country the dates of the holidays and the first time I came around a curve and the kids hit that hot 1,450 cc engine with cold water I realized that this was not such a good idea

Be careful, you are a moving target

I walked[rode] into Songkran on my second trip to the LOS.I was at the back of Jomtien and passed a pick up coming in the other direction.I never saw the bucket of water coming ,didn't even blink, got it full in the face.I somehow managed to stay upright and come to a stop. The M/C got put away and not ridden until Songkran was all over.No riding for me during Songkran!

  •  I think a liter of water weights 1 kilo or very close to. When hit with a bucket at even a slow speed can be an incredibly impact and very dangerous as findly13 has mentioned. I had a similar experience in Patong during my first Songkran in 94. A full bucket of freezing cold water days before the actual event caught me totally by surprise. I didn't manage to stay on the Dream. Which sustained a fair bit of damage to the rental. And earned me  a trip to the road rash clinic at the hospital where you are required to visit every day  for the scraping of the wounds till all the dirt is out. Its a unpleasant experience to say the least. And being that much older now than then I rarely leave the house during the event let alone on a bike. So just be warned and be careful

Last year some <deleted>*** were throwing cold water in a turn (totally blind spot) on the mountain road between Chiang Mai and Doi Suthep.

You'r leaning peacefully in a dangerous road and then SURPRISE mofo, uh-oh what's that, suicide bomber ? crossing kid ? bang, bucket in your face, let's see if you can handle that, stupidity at its finest.

Yah so basically be careful out there ????

There very often seems  a  maliciousness to it ,actually trying to hurt people
