Yes you will be dealing with live power cables if you disconnect the PEA ones or at least a live terminal block, however as you say you've worked on live wiring before you must know enough not to kill your self. If you do disconnect the PEA cables remember to insulate them. It is much safer (not completely safe but safer) to disconnect the house supply connections.

 

Reconnect the new isolation switch and house power to it, test everything, turn everything off. Reconnect your meter then turn everything back on in the house, if no breaker  trips and there is no bang you probably have not messed up.

 

I have listed each major step not because you need them listed but someone else may.

Have just had a look at my system. I don't want to disconnect the mains from the meter if I can help it, just in case they say I have been trying to do something like fiddle with my electric.

 

Have just had another look at my box see snap enclosed. This has been wired by the GREAT Electric company. The two Green wires going to top of box are the mains left being the L right being the N. Nice to see that they have used different colours.

 

All I will have to do is take out the L wire connect that with the new box same with the N. Or other way round. I can then hang it down out of the way. Whilst I disconnect the old thing and then replace it. Should be simple enough provided I don't touch any part of the box with live wire.

 

I was thinking to myself No wonder there are problems with electrics here when they Electric Comp: cant even get things correct.

Well you are fiddling with your electric aren't you?

The PEA isn't bothered with people disconnecting their power from the meter and they will easily see that your consumption hasn't dropped.

 

The wiring in and to the box is nothing to do with the PEA. They are responsible for the wiring to your meter only. Everything after that is your responsibility so it was the guy who wired up the house who decided to use green cable.

 

As a minimum you should wrap those with different colours of electrical tape, so you have a fighting chance of knowing wich one is live.

When I had the electric upgraded I went into the E/Company and they sent their man round to do said upgrade. It was him that did it that way. They did get the earth wire correct that's green. As can been seen on right side of snap. He also fitted the new meter. So they do do other things even after the box. Just seems not very well.

 

As I have said I did do all the wiring in my house. All the colours are correct The only thing that is incorrect is what a stupid Thai did.

That was not an official PEA job, but a person who happens to do a day job as a PEA employee doing private work.

 

Unless of course you have a bill from the PEA in which case you should call them and get them to change to the correct colour cable.

I got a bill from PEA with total cost around 20th bht including the new Meter. Not bothered to much as it's to late to get it sorted now, they did it some 3 years ago.

Are you sure there is not a main distribution panel somewhere else?  Those green wires look very small for an upgraded electric main feed.  But perhaps just my failing eyesight.

They as far as I know are 50+amp. So enough.

 

I have a double system from the meter. The one shown is for the front part of house, I have another set up for the back part. That powers the 5 fridges 3 large glass fronted ones. 2 chest freezers. 2 Kitchens one western and one Thai, plus the lighting and general power. They also have their own circuit breakers 5 boxes at the last count. I'm so over powered, just in case I ever get a problem with one set up I still have power at least somewhere. Even the lighting in all the rooms 8 are on a double system just in case one lot goes out one part will still work. I think it's called over doing it.

Might be something simple like you opening the fridge every 10 mins to get a beer and the fridge has a long cooling cycle and a short defrost cycle causing ice to build up in the fridge. You go away and the fridge changes it cycle. Defrosting ice can fall on the defrost heater connections or the extra water produced can short the wiring somewhere in or under the fridge. Easy fix give up the cold beer.

On a 63A incomer I would expect to see at least 10mm2 (70A), preferably 16mm2 (90A).

 

EDIT Looking at that snap I see a worrying number of neutrals on the neutral bar. i.e. one other than the incomer and that's black (should be white or blue). The lives appear to be a brownish cream, should be black or brown.

 

EDIT 2 Do those green wires go all the way back to the meter or are they spliced somewhere?

 

What size meter do you have, it should be marked 15/45 or 30/100.

Just looked and there are no marks I think that's because they are large green wires they have used. This set up shown only powers the lounge and two of my 5 double bedrooms, Oh and two loos. They are about 10+ times thicker??? than 25amp power wires if that's any indication.

So it's actually a sub-board off another main panel somewhere.

Not really, the outside diameter difference between 2.5mm2 (20A power) and 16mm2 (90A incomer) is only about 2X (4mm and 8mm). If you really want to be sure you need to measure the diameter of the copper with a vernier/micrometer and calculate the cross-sectional area.

I must say they sure do not appear that way - they look to be single strand of about 2mm (smaller than most of the breaker runs).  It looks to be an undersized feed from another panel rather than a feed from electric meter.

I may have been a bit harsh with the beer comment but it would be worth checking the defrost heater is working on the evaporator coils.

As I have said I have a double set up, when the power wire from the meter come into the house they split into two parts the first one goes to this box and the second goes to 5 boxes with their own circuit breakers. That powers the rest of the house. I cant show the split but can show snap of the upgraded Meter. If it helps.

I did reply to your post but it got lost. Yes it's a sub board it powers the front part of house, lounge two bedrooms and two loos. The rest is powered by the other 5 boxes with their own circuit breakers.

OK, that is a 30/100 meter, somewhere between it and the rest of the installation should be a 100A breaker or HRC fuse.

 

Can you sketch out your internal distribution system. I am seriously worried about the size of your sub-main wiring. I wouldn't have any subs of less than 10mm2 with a 50A breaker protecting the supply end.

 

The problem is that, once you have a permanent supply (4 Baht per unit) you can pretty much do what you like until you melt the meter (300A+). Also, unlike the UK, there is no DNO fuse. Short your incoming supply and the only overcurrent protection is the X00A drop fuses that protect the transformer.

That's true for a 110V (55V-0-55V) centre-tap system such as a site-transformer you would find in the UK for 110V tools.

The US system is 120V-0-120V so contact is going to be 120V WRT ground, potentially a smaller shock current but still a nasty bite.

 

Incidentally usless fact - The first man to die from electrocution in the Royal Navy was killed by a 48V DC supply. He apparently became trapped on a bus-bar and fried slowly ????

As crossy has said the 55v line voltage applies only to building site power supplies using a CTE transformer.

 

But if you are getting a true "line, neutral, Earth" 100v~120v supply the shock is far more likely to kill you than a 220v~250v shock, both assuming you have assistance within a very few minutes

Was thinking about the IoT and I have a setup where I can remotely switch pool lights from my smartphone. You could just buy one of those wifi enabled power switches and plug your fridge into it. You can then switch power to your fridge on and off via your phone and get a visual of when the power is on or off.
The reason I said maybe faulty installation is as my electrician was excellent at factory installations and 3 phase work, but didn't know about SafetyCuts, or stabalisers and how to wire them. His theory was that you don't use SafetyCuts because they trip. So he wired it incorrectly and it tripped every couple of days.
With help from Crossy et all. we sorted out the wiring problem and now it doesn't trip. (except for very close lightning strikes and real faults.)

Yes, switch can't be contacted therefore indicates power off.

It would if all components were battery backed.

 

I can see your point though. Some kind of remote monitoring of the condo would be nice for someone away lots.

As noted previously correct solution is to determine why the beast is tripping, but this may be easier said than done as it's not happening particularly regularly.

 

Also, arranging the freezer and fridge to be on a circuit that doesn't involve the RCD/RCBO will solve the issue no matter why the RCD trips out.

I do have a HRC fuse found it yesterday. In a box right under the roof in the Thai kitchen. I also sorted how much power goes to the T/Cut out, it's around 25% the rest going to the rear of house with its 5 C/B boxes. That has all the fridges and freezers. The front part only has LED lights TV and sockets they only power the odd fan.

 

This morning at great expense I changed the Cut out. took me around 20 min: Did that with the aid of an extension lead running from the back of house powering a lamp: I did it without turning off the power. Simple enough the only problem was clipping in the new set up. A bit of faffing about. So far so good all working well. 

With the cut out set at 10 this new one has a setting of 5/10/30 old one 10/20/30/

I think you also have to answer the question, "has it always tripped?"

If the answer is 'yes' then it could be a faulty installation from the start.

If the answer is "no", then it could be a genuine fault.

You could also install one of those Internet of Things (IoT) wifi switches and a sensor to tell you when the power has failed or room temperature is high, and sènd you a message. Then get one of the staff from 'We Are Number One' to go and reset the Safety Cut. :)

There's a aircon shop near the cornor of Jontimen road and Theppasit rd. They seem to do a fair aircon job, but may know of an electrician. Take a photo of the Safety Cut with you to show them. Emphasise that the electrician must know about SafetyCuts and has the tools Crossy recommends.

Leaving the circuit for your refrigerator active and disconnecting the rest might add some clues if you want to do some DIY testing.

 

You can discuss this over many pages but as already mentioned, the installation first needs testing to see if there is any leakage lurking just below the trip level.

 

If you want an electrician with proper test gear, the best place to ask is at one of the electricians supply stores scattered around the Pattaya area. If you cant speak Thai you will need someone to translate and explain the need for someone with proper test equipment. They do exist.

 

Re surge protection. A good electrician will also help with adding surge protection to your installation. A lot of suppliers around Chonburi are now stocking modular high power surge protectors.

That said, I am going to install a whole house surge protector and since the biggest problem is the fridge shutting off while I am away I will take the suggestion that a few people have made and wire a small panel with a single breaker in it off of my main power - before my Safe-T-Cut and plug the fridge into that.

 

My plan is:

 

1. main power int

2. whole house surge protector

3. inline sub-panel for fridge

4. safe-t-cut

5. current panels/breaker setup

 

Here is the main 75A breaker outside my condo, split off to two 60A services.

Is there a way to check if an RCBO is broken or must one simply replace it to find out?  If the earth wire is not 'earthed' will this cause the RCBO to trip?  Why do some RCBO units have a simple line in, live and neutral, and others have the earth line connected to the device also?  Is there a simple way to test the earth wire to confirm that it is actually earthed?  (What a lot of questions.)  Thank you very much for any comments.

Pushing the "Test" button should cause the RCD/RCBO to trip.  That indicates the unit is working.  No trip indicates the unit is not working.

 

Earth does not affect RCBO operation.  It works the same whether earth is present or not.

 

GFCI (common in the states) will have earth connected because they are point-of-use receptacle.  I'm not aware of the usual RCBO found in Thailand to require earth connection.  Do you have photo or snip of such?

 

A simple way to "test" earth is to check voltage between L-E in the CU.  If that shows voltage close to the L-N voltage, it's a good bet the earth is OK.
