New Swans draftee's unsocial media gaffe

A YEAR after Blaine Boekhorst's embarrassment, Tyrone Leonardis is the latest AFL draftee to learn a harsh lesson about the pitfalls of social media.

Soon after the Sydney Swans recruited the small defender with pick No.51 in Tuesday night's NAB AFL Draft, it emerged he had liked two Facebook pages that were offensive towards Swans great Adam Goodes.

They were titled "Adam Goodes for flog of the year" and "Adam Goode's (sic) for <deleted> of the year".

The Swans were soon made aware of the gaffe and said Leonardis had apologised.

He apparently liked the pages last February.

Goodes retired from the AFL after a tumultuous final season during which fans booing the indigenous star became a major issue in the game.

The two-time Brownlow Medallist is a revered figure at the club.

Leonardis' blunder came a year after Boekhorst had an awkward start to life as a Carlton player.

A few months earlier, Boekhorst had tweeted that either the entire Carlton team or then-coach Mick Malthouse had to go.

Malthouse laughed it off, Boekhorst was nicknamed "Tweet" and he went on to win Carlton's best first-year player award. And Malthouse was sacked mid-season.

Strategy comes before sentiment as Swans decline to draft Dunkley

SYDNEY SWANS recruiting guru Kinnear Beatson says his club's recruiting strategy drove the decision to overlook Josh Dunkley – son of former Swans veteran Andrew – in this year's NAB AFL Draft.

Andrew Dunkley played 217 games for the Swans, and Josh had nominated the Swans as his club of choice under the AFL's father-son rule, but when the Western Bulldogs made a bid for the teenager with pick No.25, Beatson opted not to match it.

The move surprised some but Beatson told AFL.com.au that although the decision was hard, the Swans' needs came first.

"It was a difficult one but that's what the bidding system is, and when the bid came up from the Bulldogs, we had to have a look and try and work out who was going to be there," Beatson said.

"We'd mentioned to Josh that it was a possibility so he wouldn't be surprised by that.

"That’s just what footy is at the moment with list sizes of 38, that's what list management is – you have to take the emotion out of it.

"Our main strategy in the draft was to try to improve our kicking skills, we lost 'Jetts' (Lewis Jetta) and 'Shawry' (Rhyce Shaw), and (Nick) Malceski the year before, and we were a bit light on for guys who could really kick it.

"These days in footy you have to be able to maintain possession so that was a real focus for us."

Shane Yarran was selected with pick 61 in Tuesday AFL Draft.

Mature-aged Fremantle draftee Shane Yarran says he never gave up on his dream of playing AFL.

The 26-year-old from Subiaco had to wait for his opportunity but he has vowed to grasp it with both hands.

Fremantle selected the WAFL premiership player and 2015 Bernie Naylor Medal winner with pick 61 at Tuesday’s NAB AFL Draft in Adelaide.

Pick 61 - Shane Yarran

Fremantle’s player welfare manager Mark Anderson presented Yarran with his first club top at his home in Armadale, surrounded by family and friends.

“The colour purple looks good and feels right,” he said.

Yarran said he expected his chance of being drafted was in Friday’s NAB AFL Rookie Draft.

“There was a moment of pause there, I honestly thought I was going to go through to the Rookie Draft,” he said.

“I was looking down at my phone and just heard it ring…I was so excited.”

Yarran said to remain in WA with his young family was crucial.

“To get to stay home and play football with the support of family is awesome,” he said.

“With my baby, she is my priority, her and my partner.

“We like to head down to the beach a fair bit, I always like to spend time with my family.”

Shane Yarran with his partner and daughter at his home on Tuesday night.

Yarran said his desire to play AFL never faded as he got older.

“I suppose everyone that wants to play football, you keep that hunger there and keep thinking you may always get the opportunity,” he said.

“I kept the hunger and kept my head down and hoped for the best and I have got the reward.”

“You get a lot of support in the footy world.

“Behind the scenes my partner has been my rock I think.”

Yarran said his focus now was to knuckle down into the pre-season.

“I have to concentrate on my fitness and work hard throughout the pre-season,” he said.

Fremantle general manager of player management Brad Lloyd said Yarran deserved an opportunity.

“With his background and football ability, we thought he earned it,” he said.

“He’s good overhead, has elite speed and is a nice size.

“He will really add to our playing list."

Perth Stadium will cater for 60,000 fans.

Those behind Perth's new stadium have moved to ensure problems with other AFL surfaces are not repeated.

From its inception Melbourne's Docklands Stadium, now known as Etihad, was plagued with turf issues, and more recently the surface at Sydney's ANZ Stadium has been the subject of much controversy.

The playing surface of the new Perth Stadium will cost up to $8 million, and project bosses insist it's far from an afterthought.

"We've investigated everything you can investigate about pitches, because it's reputational," WA sport and recreation director general Ron Alexander told AFL.com.au.

Alexander, the former Fitzroy captain, an inaugural Fremantle board member and chairman of selectors and inaugural West Coast coach, is the head of the project.

"It's like getting a stage right in a theatre, you've got to have it just right," he said.

"(It's) absolutely reputational, if you've got a good pitch athletes want to go play there, spectators can see a better game, and they're not seeing players and slip and slide, you can get a better standard, and they can have confidence in their footing and those sorts of things."

The new 60,000-seat stadium will have a roofline covering 85 per cent of the arena, meaning lights will be used to help the grass grow.

Builders are making no apologies for the cost.

"You'll be looking somewhere between five and eight million just for the pitch," Alexander said.

Artist's impression of new Perth Stadium on match daystadium1-oval.jpg

"They have different levels of drainage, from fine sand to course sand to blue metal, to loam, to sand on the top.

"It will drain well, it will grow well.

"For different sports you need some different hardness too.

"With contact sports like football and rugby you need some sponginess with it, so that's all on the books."

The Perth Stadium project, which includes redeveloped parkland and a new transport hub, is springing to life on the banks of Perth's Swan River next to the Crown Burswood Casino.

In September, WA premier Colin Barnett told AFL.com.au the $1.3billion project was ahead of schedule, and could host its first AFL game as early as the 2017 finals.

The arena will also be used for cricket and rugby.

Drop-in cricket pitches are being developed off site, and shouldn't impact on the quality of the playing surface for AFL games.

Best of the Draft...............do you recall?

Were at number one now...

Number one ONE.................Luke Hodge, Hawks.... well actually The Age has been so god dam slow i decided to Finnish it today, Brilliant player highly decorated with 4 premiership cups to his name.

Runners up, Jack Watts Dee's hehehe, will go down in history as the most over rated hyped no 1 but...yes but has played more than 100 games and will easy notch 200 plus games, being a big man his maturity may still to come as in the old saying of ruckman. as the Dee's go up the ladder jack will become more important to the team....

Jeff White Freo/Dee's....saw a lot of this guy ruck and key forward not in the class of Hodge but a very very good player indeed.

Adam Cooney Dogs/Ess....seen better days but for a time was a hot midfielder with a brownlow under his belt.

Nick Riewoldt Saints....Captain fantastic long career doing it right, hard to stand out week in week out at full forward but he has.

Darren Gasper Swans/Tigers don't think he ever lived up to number one but was a very good defender i thought at the Tigers.

Alan Johnson Dee's classy winger in the days of specialist wingers the very first no 1...10 plus years on a wing...WA state player would fit in i think at the 3rd best number one behind Hodge and Riewoldt.

Dudd Number 1's

Anthony Banik Tigers...you know he did play some good games in defence career cut short for some reason unbeknown to me.

Steven Hooper Cats....im pretty sure this guy came with a lot of hoooooowlar but did pretty much nothing....reliing on memory here;

2 seasons with the Swans and decided to run back to Victoria...another 200 games with Richmond

Similar to the previously mentioned Shannon grant & Anthony Rocca. Couple of seasons with Sydney, didn't want to re-sign, then [played another 200+ games for their new club.

I know a bit about anonthy, his older cousin did some work for me, he had 50 grand to spend very early, something like signing on....he bought a unit (house) i was involved in building at the time, big bro brought the other one, sav rocca.

The story was always and even before he was drafted as i said i knew the cousin...anthony was not interested to be anywhere else but with big brother and at Collingwood and living at home, mum more than dad was the mouth piece and anthony was a bit of a mum's boy, the cousin said sav couldn't care less where he played was just happy getting a game, anthony was far more determined to be at vic park.

Apparently the deal as i knew it was 50 grand to come see if he could get to like it up north and bring mum along too, and if no like they would clear him to collingwood.

Swans in those days didn't have smart people running the club, unfortunately for them they gave away more than just the money, anthony was a waste of time could have been used on someone who would have been happy to be there.

Anthony never set the world on fire but he had his moments, this preoccupation on getting pick one doesn't make sense to me, i mean how many decent pick 1's were there?

Very interesting

We were desperate for someone to kick goals long term and he was young but had the potential. The Swans bent over backwards trying to keep him happy, even giving him a run on in the 96 GF, trying to tempt him to stay. It was never going to happen.

I was happy when his brother Sav went to play for North.

Brisbane Lions' Lewis Taylor charged over $10,000 damage to eight vehicles

Brisbane Lions player Lewis Taylor has been charged with causing $10,000 damage after eight vehicles were trashed at Mortlake 13 months ago.

Police alleged in the Warrnambool court on Thursday that on October 22, 2014, Taylor and a co-accused caused the criminal damage.

Most of the damage, valued at $10,635, involved smashing the windscreens of four tip trucks, a Pathfinder, Fairmont Ghia, garbage truck and a Mazda truck.

The case was adjourned to be considered for diversion which, if approved, would result in the 20-year-old not having a criminal record.

Taylor was not present in court.

He has played 44 AFL games and after an impressive debut was named thr 2014 AFL Rising Star winner.

Rookie draft See who your club selected.

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2015-11-27/preseason-and-rookie-drafts-how-did-your-club-fare

This is the commentary for the Swans selections.

Who they drafted: Tom Papley (Gippsland Power), Harry Marsh (Sydney Swans), Kyle Galloway (Shepparton), Sam Murray (Wodonga Raiders), Colin O'Riordan (Irish International rookie)

Summary: The Swans have continued their push towards elite foot skills and speed by taking Papley and Murray, while the 209cm, 105kg Galloway gives them yet another ruckman to develop. Papley and Murray also fit the mould of a small forward that the Swans need to complement their talls in Lance Franklin, Kurt Tippett and Callum Sinclair.

What the club says: "Papley is a small forward who played 15 games for Gippsland Power in the TAC Cup and kicked 33 goals for the season. Throughout the course of the year he booted 41 goals from 70 shots after starting the season as a midfielder." – sydneyswans.com.au

"Kyle [Galloway] is quite a unique player, having not played too many games of AFL, but he displays all of the attributes we're looking for in a ruckman – he's tall, a good size with a great reach and he's deceptively agile. It's becoming increasingly difficult to find players who are capable of playing AFL footy in the ruck but with his height and size we think Kyle is certainly worth a punt. We’re also pleased to bring Sam [Murray] on to our list as we know he attracted a lot of attention in the back half of the season. Sam is a 189cm left-footer who can play as a half-forward or on the wing – he's got great speed and has a real knack for kicking goals. Sam showed great character this year after being overlooked for the Murray Bushrangers squad. He persevered, worked on the areas he needed to and was rewarded with a breakout season playing for the Wodonga Raiders and now has an opportunity on our rookie list." - Swans recruiting manager Kinnear Beatson

TBH, I'm staggered Crowley didn't get picked up.

Especially when you look at some of the spuds that have been taken.

209cm and 105 kilos at age 19! phew...

Standing 209cm and weighing 105kg, Galloway is a developing ruck prospect who hails from Deniliquin in southern NSW.

The 19-year-old is relatively new to AFL having only picked up the game as a late teen. He played up forward and in the ruck for the Shepparton Bears in the Goulburn Valley Football League this year after commencing the year with the Murray Bushrangers in the TAC Cup.

Galloway also represented the NSW/ACT RAMS, coached by former Swan Tadhg Kennelly, as an over-age player in the Under-18 Championships.

Brad Scott signs contract extension with North Melbourne until end of 2018 season

NORTH Melbourne coach Brad Scott has agreed to a two-year contract extension which will tie him to the club until the end of the 2018 AFL season.

Scott, 39, has been coach of the Kangaroos since 2010.

“I’m really excited to re-commit to the football club for another few years and just ecstatic that the club sees fit to reappoint me and they see me as the right person to take this group forward,” Scott told NMFC.com.au at the club’s pre-season training camp in Utah.

“I think if you look at all the really strong clubs over the last two decades, their strength comes from stability.

“We’ve been able to build over the last five years and put a lot of things in place and we’re really looking forward to our future. That stability gives all the coaches, all the players and administrators that we are heading in the right direction.

“Finishing in two preliminary finals (in 2014 and 2015) doesn’t mean you start any further ahead or any further behind any other team in the competition.”
