Two men were killed when their six-wheel truck fell off a roadside into a ravine in Chiang Rai’s Muang district on Tuesday evening.

Police said the accident happened on a mountainous road in Ban Nong Phak Nam village in Tambon Mae Yao at 5.30pm.

The truck’s driver, Kham-ai Phamung, 50, was killed along with a worker, Sawat Suphajai, 54. Both were residents of Tambon Mae Yao.

The two men were apparently delivering construction materials to a buyer in Ban Huay Khom village, but on a steep slope the truck lost power and began sliding backwards until it left the road, plunged 15 metres into the ravine and flipped.

It took rescuers about three hours to extricate the bodies from the battered truck before sending them for autopsy at the Chiang Rai Prachanukroah Hospital.

Overloaded truck driven to fast by a tired and slightly drunk driver?

No, they were going up hill , could not be going fast up hill .

No suggestion that the truck was overloaded or that the driver was drunk .

What you say is very true, however, was the truck so overloaded that it could not possibly make the gradient ? I have driven all around that area and I have to say that some of the inclines / declines are frightening, even for an experienced driver such as myself who happens to have developed Vertigo in later years, so I needed to concentrate on the white lane markers on the road and not the terrifying view over the precipice ????

The OP states that the truck could not make the hill / incline and started to slide backwards, that would indicate overloading and a piss poor braking system. The driver should have tried to slow it as much as possible and engage all brakes, hand and foot, a low forward gear and switch off the engine to prevent it from moving.

Accidents are so sad for the guys that are killed and the family they leave behind. These guys were probably the breadwinners of the family and don't forget Thailand has no social security system so the family will struggle

Ok lost power so no forward direction... but brakes & gears all prevent you from sliding backwards?

Lets all not forget , 2 thai men died , how sad that is . That should be enough , and not assuming what happened.

Can't you read the truck fell off the road doesn't mention drivers fault

Both men were dead yet it states the truck lost power and fell of the road. If both were dead how could they possibly surmise that ?  Perhaps as is the common case here the truck was grossly overloaded and it stalled, thus causing it to slide backwards because the brakes didn't work properly either, another common issue. In both scenarios it is for the driver to ensure his vehicle is not overloaded and has effective brakes. If either of those were the issue then it has to be the drivers fault.

Burned the clutch and the brakes couldn't stop the overloaded truck from rolling backwards?
