No, extension based on retirement.

But I am Belgian, one of the +/- 70 countries which embassy/consulate here is still issuing a Letter of Income / Affidavit.

I understand, and this is good for you.

Can I ask, as other people have had their consulates stop issuing income verification letters, what are your plans, should your embassy also stop issuing  these letters?

I am permanently here since 2000.

Since than I transfer (voluntarily) 2000 euro monthly to Thailand and spend them.

So, that would be OK for the "65000 monthly rule".

I am also married to a Thai lady, so 40000 would also be OK for the "Marriage Visa rule".

Saigon is kicking. Hanoi is cultured  but closed at 10.30. Danang. I'd like to go but I know it wont be like pattaya.  Let's face it. For pattaya, better or worse.  Theres no place like it.

I haven't been for awhile, but Vung Tow was known as the Pattaya of Vietnam back when I lived in Hanoi - lots of sex workers on the beach and such.

Yes, I know.  I was asking for it in southern places  of Vietnam.  Found it regularly, but not everywhere.  It really is a nice beer.

i noticed haiphong beer not available either away from native area.

It's brewed in Hue, not far up the coast from Danang. Huda is a combination of Hu (Hue) and da (Danmach), due to the use of Danish brewing technology and equipment.

Ok.

I had found it in Ho Chi Minh City, but it's not a beer available nation wide so easily.

It would probably be my regular beer, and not because of pricing.  I actually think it's a great beer.

How about finding non pro girls in danang? It's a city of 1+million people so I'm sure there are some girls on tinder, in bars and what have you.

Depends on who you are  , if you are young and rich and looking for a future Wife , you may be in luck .

If you are old , unkempt or has lots of baggage and are looking for free sex, you probably wont find anything

Yup, you're right when you say you haven't been in a while.

I agree, but you don't have to be so young, or so rich.

To be with a foreigner is still a bit of a novelty in Vietnam.

Even the Vietnamese men want to have a beer with a foreigner.  Something that certainly doesn't exist in Thailand.

Won't last for long. The pattern is the same, first ones, when there are only a few around, are a novelty and treated well. When the hordes come, they turn into despicable aliens the only purpose of which is to be an ATM. It's human nature.

As a 9 year veteran of Thailand, and Asia, here is my 2 cents.

i have never felt so safe as in Danang.

city is very very clean, beach is beautiful and yes u can actually swim in the ocean, ( unlike pattaya)

beautiful boardwalk along the beach, as well as along the riverside in downtown Danang.

people in Danang were THE friendliest I have ever come across in Asia.

international airport

city bylaw that no beggars are allowed

no stray dogs, people actually have pets here and actually take care of them

lots of great dining options, - international cuisine

nice mix of bars, expat and local, with no hookers bothering you

by far the most beautiful woman in th world. Classy well dressed sophisticated woman, unlike the Thai trash

not throwing themselves at the unkept scumbags frequenting pattaya

the weather is fabulous, warm during the day, cool at night

class of people and expats- tourists is far superior than the lowlifes in pattaya, I found it like a breath of fresh air, actually being able to carry on a conversation with someone.

no drunk in men laying around in a pool of urine, wasting away like in pattaya.

pattaya scum should not even bother with Danang as woman here won't even acknowledge you, so stay in pattaya with all the other decrepit lowlifes.

service is fabulous, as the people here actually want your business and are happy to serve you.

people are very honest, never saw anyone cheated on money.

loved Danang, feel sorry for the people spending their golden years in the pattaya shithole.

dress appropriately , smile and the local woman love you, families greet you walking around, people want to speak with u, foreigners are still a novelty.

so quiet and relaxed at night.

Considering Vietnam's boarders only really opened up around 1990, and no one rushed in until word got around in relation to safety, I think it's fair to say the "novelty" factor will be around for some years, possibly decades, to come.

Thailand / Pattaya, on the other hand, if it doesn't take drastic action, and soon, will just become a shadow of its former self, with many derelict buildings falling into various stages of decay, as the tourists, and therefore the next generation of retirees, chose Vietnam over Thailand.

No but unlike Thailand being married to a Vietnamese gives you easy access to a 5 year exemption cert and and, unlike Thailand, a sensible chance of a permanent residency card.

That's great but I was responding to a post that touted it as a place to retire. It is not that yet and it may never be. I wouldn't be surprised if they never bother with retirement visas. Most countries don't. To people that say you can live on visa runs, yeah you can, but for an entire retirement?

Strangely enough many married people retire also, hence the advantage of Vietnam to Thailand if married to a Vietnamese as a place to retire or do you only consider single people can retire ?

Whilst you use the words "visa run" most retirees, even those in Thailand, go on a holiday, or go back to their home country.  This can easily act as a "visa run" in Vietnam.

As far as Vietnam will never be a place to retire to, tell that to all the retired expats in Vietnam that p*ss themselves laughing at the hoops the retired expats in Thailand have to jump through to do the same thing they are doing in Vietnam, but for way cheaper and easier. ????

Maybe so, but no 800k/400k seasoning and waste of money, no TM30, and all of the other costly, time consuming, bureaucratic crap that the Thai visa system has.

Please don't take your personal case as a general rule...

I am living here on Retirement Extension; I don't need to have 800k, 400k or any amount in a Thai bank; I only need to visit the Immigration once a year for the extension. (or in fact twice as I must come back the next they to get back my passport). No TM30 needed and 90-Days reports take 2 minutes on computer.

For many people it's far to be as bad as you describe it.
