Any new news / updates on the new foreign income laws?
Even after Aussie pensioners in the Australia Forum watched it, they still believed the Aussie aged pension was covered by the DTA. -

Harassment of Taiwan an ominous clue to Trump 2.0 foreign policy
US President Donald Trump’s threat to levy tariffs against imported semiconductors creates additional stress for Taiwan, which is already menaced by increasing military pressure from the People’s Republic of China. Trump’s threat also indicates the ascendancy within the White House, at least for now, of American unilateralism over the alternative of attempting to build a collective security bulwark against China. On January 27, Trump said that “in the very near future” the US government would impose tariffs on foreign-produced semiconductors, explaining that the objective is to “return the production of these essential goods to the United States.” He then specifically mentioned that chip-makers “left us and they went to Taiwan.” https://asiatimes.com/2025/01/harassment-of-taiwan-an-ominous-clue-to-trump-2-0-foreign-policy/ This is Trump's way of punishing Taiwan's TMSC for building a now operational semiconductor plant in Arizona And it has plans to open another one, too. And they deserve that punishment. After all, it was those shadowy, traitorous figures in the Biden Administration that negotiated the deal. $6.6 billion TSMC deal in Arizona the latest in the CHIPS Act’s rollout https://www.marketplace.org/2024/04/09/tsmc-deal-chips-acts-semiconductors/ -

Retail Crime Reaches Crisis Levels as Shoplifting and Attacks Surge
In California it is completely out of control, but typically there's no violence involved because the police just simply are not interested in the theft of merchandise under $1,000. So someone can load up a shopping cart, walk out the front door and the security guard is powerless to do anything, and the police will not intervene. In my opinion the security guard should be equipped with batons, pepper spray and tasers and be encouraged to use them on thieves. Fortunately California just recently got a new attorney general who's more conservative and supposedly tough on crime, let us hope that helps to alleviate a crisis situation. -

Thaksin Granted Court Permission to Visit Malaysia
File photo courtesy Spring News In a notable court decision today, January 31, former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra received approval to travel to Malaysia this coming weekend, despite being embroiled in a lese majeste case. The Criminal Court's ruling permits Thaksin, a significant figure in Thai politics and father to current Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, to temporarily leave the country. The purpose of Thaksin's visit is to meet with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Sunday and Monday. Anwar, who currently holds the chairmanship of ASEAN, has named Thaksin as a personal adviser, underscoring the significance of their discussions during the visit. To secure his departure, Thaksin deposited a collateral of 5 million baht with the court, pledging his return to Thailand immediately following his meeting in Malaysia. This development marks a departure from last year's proceedings, where the court rejected Thaksin's request to travel to Dubai for purported medical treatment. Having resided in self-imposed exile in the Middle Eastern city until his 2023 return to Thailand, Thaksin's travel requests have received varied responses from the judiciary. Thaksin's legal troubles stem from a 2015 interview in Seoul, during which he allegedly made statements with lese majeste content regarding the Thai monarchy's supposed involvement in the 2006 coup that led to his ousting as prime minister. The case remains a contentious issue within Thai legal and political circles. The court's decision to permit Thaksin's travel highlights ongoing complexities in the intersection of Thai politics and judiciary proceedings, reported Thai Newsroom. Observers will be closely monitoring his movements and any developments following the Malaysia visit. This decision adds a new chapter to the ongoing narrative of Thaksin's life post-premiership, amidst Thailand's ever-shifting political landscape. -- 2025-01-31 -
