Video: Motorist opens the door into a biker then drives off as if nothing had happened

An injured motorcyclist has appealed to a driver from his bed to own up to what he did after he opened a car door and floored him.

CCTV footage from the area of Seri Thai Soi 20/1 showed the driver of a pick-up open the door directly in the path of the motorcycle.

The driver then repeatedly tried to close the door that appeared damaged.

People come to help the stricken motorcyclist. After this the pick-up driver just drives off.

The motorcyclist told Thai Rath from his bed that when he saw the footage he was disgusted. He called on the driver to take responsibility.

He said he was the breadwinner of his family and had cancer.

He said that he often went this way on his motorcycle and said he had had no problem previously with the driver of the pick-up. He was amazed that neither the driver nor passenger offered him any help at all.

A female relative said they went to the police to file a complaint. She said the police told them to find out the licence plate of the pick-up, they wouldn't do it.

They managed to do with this and called the driver but got no answer.

They are now preparing to go back to the police with the further evidence they have gathered.

Thai Rath posed the question on their video report: Why did the driver open the door?

I go between the cars too.. but not too fast just for this reason. But there is no reason for anyone to open a car door like that. Plus if you do then looking at what is behind you is quite important. I hope they get the guy.

Yes I agree with you but unfortunately that driver had a reason to open that door....it was his reason......and we know anything is possible here....whereas conscientious motor bike riders, like you and I etc understand this problem, most of the riders here do not. They all figure the other guy will look out for them. They ride with blinders on. Where smarter riders, to the best of their ability, will make sure no one goes where they want to go. (And no door goes where they go.)

Even at your and my slower speed, there is no avoiding a suddenly opened door at the wrong time, only the damage is less then if your going faster. So its still on the person opening the door.

"So its still on the person opening the door."

Tell that to the guy in the hospital bed, especially if he's dead or paralyzed....Maybe next time the rider will wait behind the cars (kinda like a car does)....what's the rush? or go dead slow through there and if a door opens there will be no big problem. I ride like that but then I'm a bit of a wimp when it comes to broken bones etc.

As other motorcycles were zipping past regularly, the driver must have been aware. I think that it may be a fair assumption that he got annoyed about the bikes moving when he couldn't and he opened the door with the intention to bring the bike down.

Er right... report them to who?  The police?

The rider is on the ground injured, the pick up has quickly moved on. Driver not in a state to react quickly to decide what to do / injured, getting up quickly probably not going to happen, plus rider needs to think quickly what to do about his/her bike, damaged and on the tarmac.

How could the rider talk to them (people in the pick up, and get their names and what is they just ignored the rider and just drove away?

Even dead slow you wont be able to avoid it, if you think otherwise you should not be on that bike. The one to blame is the person opening the door and nobody else. The guy might have gone slower but the initial mistake is made by the guy opening the door. When I am in my car i keep an eye out for motorcycles in between lanes just like is normal in Thailand.

Yes everyone knows who is to blame, that's pretty obvious. Obviously you are not getting my point. I am saying, with all due respect, that as a motorbike rider one should ride as safely as possible, and this guy wasn't, in my meager opinion. Of course the guy in the car is to blame, so what....go and ride like him and one day someone else may be to blame for your accident. In the future I'll just wait behind the last car, (since going slow between the waiting vehicles doesn't always work) or I'll take my own car.....

Aha an other guy who does not go between cars and judges others who do. Its the norm here and if your going at a reasonable speed you are still in danger. Its a danger I accept.

Your remark about being able to avoid it is just ... idiotic.. now your saying your waiting. That is different from going slow. I have seen pushbikes (by definition a bike goes slow) get taken out exactly the same way in my country so speed is not the issue. Its the car driver. Its just an other risk we have. Thankfully it does not happen often.

I use the bike to get around cars.. that is what its made for and used in Thailand. There is no use using a bike if you don't use its advantages.

An absolute fool, with no regard for other humans. What does that make him? A sub human? A worm? A reptile? A parasite? Knowing how many motorbikes weave in between the lanes, why would anyone open their door without looking? Sabotage? Intentional harm? Or just a brain with an IQ lower than room temperature, in France during the winter?

Thai motorcyclists pass on all sides - left side and right side...it makes no difference whether it’s the left middle or the fast lane....

Respect thai laws? You tell me what the law says for motorcyclist passing a car on a 1, 2 and 3 lane road moving in the same direction?

Well, you have to be an idiot to open a car door in traffic without looking.

It's a regular occurrence on Thai roads.  Like watching fools drive the wrong way down the highway, it's pretty much something I see every time I get in the car.  I've watched morons look directly at my car and flip their door open forcing me avoid the door.  Like other suicidal Thai behavior, this never fails to amaze me in it's sheer stupidity as well as it's ability of kill and injure both the moron opening the door and those who hit it.
Watched it happen a few years back when I was parked across from Dukes on the Ping River.  Woman in the car in front of me crosses the road, unlocks her door, looks directly at an oncoming bicyclist, flips her door open causing the guy to come off the bike, she gets in, and drives off.  The absolute arrogance is what floored me.  What was the message?  "I drive a nice car and you drive a bicycle.  I'm high and you're low.  I have the right to hurt you and you have no rights at all compared to Miss Elite me, me, me."
The question to ask is: Why is that an ingrained, cultural trait of Thai drivers?  I'm assuming it is right along with all the other aggressive, self-centered, and idiotic driving behaviors that eventually add up to enough deaths and injuries to make Thailand close to if not the top of the list of The Most Dangerous Roads in The World.
Never ending, day-after-day, always amazing - Thailand, it's roads, and it's drivers.

Yes - I see it all the time here in Thailand, but am not sure it is legal to drive in between vehicles.

The driver of the truck may have been opening his door to pour out some old coffee or something.

Obviously the truck driver should have tried to get over to the side and park his vehicle to help the motorcyclist.

Speed kills, I say better to ride a bicycle or walk.... or take a baht bus.

sounds about fair,

how often do motorcyclists show any consideration when they drive on footpaths causing people to leap out of the way, sometime hitting pedestrians with wing mirrors etc?

before attempting to defend the rights of that motorbiker think about all the wrongs that one has commited, none of them are innocent

absolutely no sympathy for motorbikers in this country, none at all

edited to add that thai people like to join in a confrontation, one accident suddenly every biker will be trying to stick up for the biker, next thing you know the swarm is happening, safest thing to do if you accidently knock a biker off is to drive far far away before you report it,
