you want to use exit 1 or 3, that is the side where traffic flows north.  i believe there is a more formal taxi queue nearer exit 1.  but taxis are often lined up near exit 3 also during peak travel hours.  you can also flag one down that happens to be driving by.  the taxi mafia typically operate a bit north of exit 3.  they are parked by the curb.  can negotiate a rate with them (won't use a meter).  they will probably want 200-300thb.

i mention the taxi mafia guys as sometimes a regular taxi driver can't understand where i want to go (my thai is very limited), i don't have that problem with the taxi mafia guys.  i assume it is because they work there every day and have experience on where people ask to go from there.  other taxis (that will use meter) may not be as familiar with the area and the typical location requests.  so good to have the taxi mafia there as a backup.

Your comments are interesting and I agree.

They may charge a flat fee more, but usually quicker. I generally know the price to get around BKK.  For 100 b more could careless.

The taxi's are on the same side as the chatuchak park and subwaystation.

But those taxi's waiting there are all maffia, we avoid them and wait for an arriving taxi at the 'wrong' side because they will just use the metre, unlike those guys waiting at the park side.

Tell the driver you go to Impact Thaaa Neeee....

I heard some of the few vans still operating at VM are the MTT vans.  Chatuchak is a cesspool of taxi Mafia... even seen a chicken vendor charging double usual prices for chicken legs around BKK.

Alternatively, there are minibuses for about 60 baht. I used to get one going to Impact Arena in the large car park. Are they still there?

Correct. I had good luck at the park side (going North). At the far end there are many taxis cuing up in the middle of the road. Use them.

Van and minibus are often the same thing unless you are actually talking about a smaller than usual bus, as opposed to a 12 or 15 passenger Toyota.  This came up last month, and another member stated the vans were still rolling out of VM... should be well under 60..it is 60 to Ayutthaya.  30-35 is more probable.. Tons of commuters doing that trip.  There is a ferry terminal at Pakret...

the taxi mafia guys aren't as bad as some make them out to be.  some areas, like patpong or out front of lebua state tower are out of control.  but other areas aren't so bad.  i work in 100thb increments.  if i get a meter and it is 140, the guy is going to get 200.  if i get a meter and it is 60, the guy is going to get 100.  if i don't get a meter, i know the prices in the two examples are going to be 200 and 100.

there are non taxi mafia queues on the side with north flowing traffic.  near exit 1 is a normal queue, i've been dropped off in that queue a few times on my way back from CW immigration.  near exit 3, they queue next to a cement divider one lane out into the road.  so accessing them can be tricky, you'll have buses driving behind you as you wait your turn to get into a taxi.  it is a little scary for me so if i see people in line for those 'non mafia taxis', i just head to the taxi mafia guys as i won't stand in the middle of the road for more than 20 seconds.  i don't use the exit 1 queue as there is often traffic on the road so the further up you get the taxi, the quicker you'll get to your destination.

getting a taxi on the southbound side (as you suggest) will likely add time to your journey if you are headed north.  especially during the morning commute.  you will get a meter rate but the fare you end up paying may be equal to or more than what you would pay the taxi mafia guys that operate a bit north of exit 3.

I have lived in BKK for 10 years and taxi is my main mode of transportation - I pay meter 9 out of 10 times - if the first one refuses second or third or fourth will eventually go on meter - and that’s true going from anywhere to anywhere in BKK - mo chit to muang thong included even with them lined up Taxis by the stations.

Rule of thumb is always flag a moving taxi and not a parked one (those usually one or two on front of the hotel or tourist spots). But if they are parked (several in a row) at the BTS - they are simply waiting for passengers.

Yes there are some bad apples out there but there such a huge supply of taxis in BKK you will always find someone willing to go on meter.

When I don’t pay meter you ask ? When the distant is too short combined with heavy traffic - then I round off to nearest 20 or 40 bhat extra. Taxi is cheap on BKK - for real!!
