Overstaying English teacher working for 15K a month arrested in north east Thailand

Immigration chief Lt-Gen Sompong Chingduang has announced the arrest of an African national who was on overstay of more than four years in the north east of Thailand.

 

The Cameroonian was teaching English at a private school in Sri Bunreuang in Nong Bua Lamphu province. 

 

He was working for 15,000 baht a month and had been there two months. 

 

He was named by Naew Na as Mr Njei, 32, but a vinyl board at the press briefing said he was Mr Mjel.

 

It was shown that he entered Thailand on February 13th 2015 and never did anything about extending his right to stay. He was thus on overstay of 1,691 days. 

 

Both English and French are national languages of Cameroon, notes Thaivisa.

Does Thailand need English teachers according to market demand?  Yes very much so.  Do many Thais qualify to teach English with a high level of proficiency say IELTS score of 8 or 8.5?  No.  Can foreign born native English speakers help to teach Thai students English?  Yes.  Does the current government make it easy and financially rewarding for good quality English teachers with relevant backgrounds, advanced degrees, and lots of experience to come and teach?  Absolutely not.  Is the process to obtain a work permit straight forward and easy to navigate for a foreigner?  No.  Is it expensive and difficult to stay in compliance?  Yes.  Does the Thai government protect or assist foreign teachers in dealing with fraudulent schools?  No.  Will schools that wish to hire foreign teachers help foreigners with the permits required?  No.  Is the over all salary and pay high enough to attract good quality talent?  No, not at all.   

 

So adding up all these factors we have a) lots of market demand b) low pay c) expensive and difficult to navigate bureaucracy for permits and d) no assistance with a high percentage of fraud. 

 

Adding all these up I can't see why Thailand isn't literally flooded with high quality teachers from abroad eager to help educate.  It really is a mystery.  Must be bad fortune.

Every school knows the visa status of an employee, employing someone on the wrong status is first an offence, so yes the school should be charged even if they grassed him up. I see a labor violation for the school and immigration violation for the teacher.

Same question I wondered many times...is it in Thailand enough to speak English as mother tongue to be also a teacher? Does the school not do checks of qualifications?

Christ! Where is Poster Boy? Is he in hidings? Sometimes I wonder if these guys think before reacting or they react before thinking. Instead of going after corrupt officials, no they go after good foreigners trying to help Young Thai children learn English.

English spoken in Thailand is not phonetic English it's the basterdized version American English.  Radio FM 88 is typical American English.

Sorry can you explain ? They have caught someone who is breaking the law, but you would prefer them to be catching other people who are breaking the same law ?

Good foreigners don't break the law.

Immigration police are paid to go after people who are breaking immigration laws. The clue is in the name.

Cameroon is a bilingual country where French and English is widely spoken. Your version of wiki is misleading you. Have been there.

That vinyl board will very soon provide a decorative roof cover for one lucky Somtam seller's trolley.  As the sun beats down, the fading image of Mr Njei long after having left Thailand will blend into the scenery.

If I was in charge I would turn this into a profitable transaction for everyone and build Thailand

Making a citadel does not work - people want teachers - teacher wanted to teach - why not make it beneficial for all parties

How does it serve anyone to do this kind of action? The employer should be asked to pay some form of penalty and provide passport then the teacher should be stamped in and allowed to help the economy develop - this is an emerging market do not forget 

How can an emerging market develop when there is a stone in the river? The flow is blocked by detrimental ideologies that serve literally no one - thailand lost because they could have taken money from a obviously very rich educational establishment and the youth lost a teacher

This kind of action must be discussed it must be brought to light and it must be known that it is moronic to drive away teachers in a country that badly needs a lot of help
