Embarrassing! Electronic Monitoring bracelets can be removed by soap

Thai officials were left red faced yesterday when it was discovered that the much vaunted EM (Electronic Monitoring) devices for drink drivers and other criminals could simple be removed with soap or a bit of washing up liquid.

Justice minister Somsak Thepsuthin was left with egg on his face after witnessing a test on an underling that showed the bracelet could easily be taken off. All the removal did was create a signal to the monitoring center that it had been tampered with.

It could easily be reattached after.

There was better news if the device was placed on the ankle - it could be removed but it would need to be broken creating a signal to that affect to alert the authorities to take action.

The EM device is used to make sure wearers keep to a 10 pm curfew and don't do things like drive vehicles or tamper with witnesses in various cases.

The devices are supposed to be immovable and Somsak was at the probation department yesterday to prove that they were OK.

Now he has set a two week deadline to investigate the specifications of the device and the supplier.

Thaivisa notes that the procurement of several expensive devices for security personnel have created problems in recent years.

A bomb detection device that cost a huge amount of money was shown to be a fake.

Comforting to know they are removable for when it becomes compulsory for all long stay aliens to wear them in the future!

What! I think not, such an error would never be made.

That's great news for expats wishing to stay here long term...

Nice shot.  But afraid i’m just not that desperate.

...remove it and put it to one of your Dogs Legs......????????????

A different perspective (August 7, 2019):

https://thethaiger.com/hot-news/crime/ministry-probes-rented-electronic-monitoring-ankle-bracelets-from-china

  • The Thai Justice Ministry is investigating the electronic monitoring ankle bracelets rented by the Department of Probation from a Chinese company. A Thai company has complained that the device can be removed by the offenders wearing them without the department being alerted.
  • Thai PBS reports that the complaint was filed by Aekkaphol Kongphutorn, representative of Fort Corporation, one of the bidders for a contract to rent EM ankle bracelets to the Department of Probation. The complaint has already been received by Justice Department officials.

Don't knock it till you try it. ????

So much for the cunning TM555 plan. 95% of the parolees would locate to the nearest soapy massage.

Ruin the line of the silk socks if worn on ankle.

This is the same device all of you foreigners will be wearing soon so take notes.

Got to love the terminology that they use in these reports like this as if it's a slave in some evil monster's fiefdom. Maybe next time they'll use peon or minion

The R&D involved in altering a novelty golf ball finder to become the GT200 bomb detector must have taken many, many days - well, both days anyway (including the time on the golf course).

Don't give em ideas for gawd's sake, though I'm sure that has been mooted.
