Upside down "Stop!" sign goes viral on social media

Thai social media was in stitches after a picture of a stop sign in Buriram went viral on the internet.

The sign that says "Yut" in Thai was upside down.

Highways director Wit Worawong said the sign was fine when it was installed on a new road near the site of the Moto GP in 2018.

And it was still OK when the prime minister visited a local reservoir on August 19th of this year.

Wit reckons someone has been up to a bit of "sign shenanigans" - it has now been put right.

The public can call 1146 to report incorrect signage, reported Sanook.

I grew up thinking it meant Screech Tires On Pavement. At least that's what the older boys taught me.

Actually this may work, people will stop to have a laught at it thus saving their lives.

But, so fantastic! What a happening!

...make excuses that the Sign means the opposing traffic has to Stop!

would have been a more productive article, if accompanied by an official Police warning to those who interfere with signage!!   - instead of it being posted up like some sort of joke.

Upside down means the opposite, so you are instructed NOT to stop. ????

Show me one single Thai driver who can explain correctly what he is required to do in view of a STOP sign ...

does it matter in thailand?

Doesn't matter what it says, the shape and colour of the sign is pretty well universal in most traffic codes. You should be able to recognise it by its shape from behind. That's what I was taught anyway.

Did someone interfere with the signage, or was the person who installed the sign incapable of reading and thus knowing that it was upside-down?

They'd take as much notice of that as they do red traffic lights....

This is a thing? Who cares... Thaos in general do not read or pay any attention to them or any others anyway.

But funny from the stand point that I will bet even money on no one else noticing!

"Thaos in general do not read"

Interesting observation, especially your first word.

1) it is getting noticed and hence would, under different circumstances, considered smart

2) possibly explains, why transport minister Saksayam Chidchob, wants to expand Buriram International Airport. It certainly has nothing to do with the fact, that his father Chai Chidchop is a bigwig in town (former house speaker) and his brother is the uncrowned king of Buriram who brought the formula one race track to town. Once the airport is extended they can do away with roads and traffic signs as the next step could be a railway extension from Korat via Buriram to China - just saying ............

Small buttons on phone. Good call though. Sorry for the typo! But you get the point? For no one pays any attention to Yield or Stop signs or the double yellow line. All seem to be a 'suggestion' here and from it (and many other factors) the body count never ends.  Oh and if I sounded condescending ... well ... sorry Thailand but maybe do something about stopping the carnage?

Buriram, home of 2 international motorbike races every year and champions league football most years. Seems a good reason for an international airport. Ten years ago it was a joke province but just goes to show how some passion and good development can change a place.
