Thai girlfriend currently In uk with me on a 6 month uk visit visa, her thai friend who is a permanent resident of switzerland would like her to come to visit her for a week, is this possible at all or a complete no go, her thai friend would provide all accomadation, expenses, flight and can prove residence etc, return flights to uk, I'm just wondering if this is at all possible or would she had to apply for this from thailand prior to her coming to the uk, any help / advise greatly appreciated thanks in advance. If this is possible what would we need to do with regards to additional visa if required

Normally applicants for Schengen Visas have to apply from their normal country of residence, not where they're visiting.

I think it's unlikey that your girlfriend will be able to apply for a visa whilst she's holiday in the UK, the website doesn't make it clear, if it does I can't find it.

The online application doesn't allow you to enter a non UK address, maybe she might be able to use you address, I really don't know.

Maybe give the Application Centre a call on 020 7605 6745 or the Swiss Consulate on 020 7616 6000

Indeed you generally have to apply for a Schengen visa in your country of residence.  Exceptions excist for family of EU/EEA national, unforseen emergencies etc. So it's unlikely that the Swissembassy in the UK would help you in this case.

Call the Embassy of Switzerland in London; there you get it from the horse's mouth. Alternatively check on their website; this is a very common occurrence of a person living in the UK on a non-UK/non-European passport. She will need a Schengen visa, to be issued by the country of first call, i.e. Switzerland. Your call.

The OP’s girlfriend doesn’t live in the UK, she lives in Thailand and is only visiting the UK, so needs to apply in Thailand.

Nevertheless I would call the Embassy of Switzerland in London - as the lady is presently in the UK on a six months visa. Quite obviously the Swiss would not send her back to Bangkok just to apply for a visa and return back to the UK - I hope ????

I am not sure your quote is correct about applying from their country of residence

My nephew which studies in Australia and is not a resident of Australia got his

Schengen visa in Australia when we visited Germany

As far as I am aware Thais must apply in Thailand for a Schengen visa.

I wanted to take my missus from the UK on a mini trip to Bruges But was told that she could not apply in the UK for a Schengen.

Incorrect.

VfS Global are the appointed agents for the Swiss Embassy.

My nephew has been in Australia for many years on a student visa and is not a resident of Australia

he applied while he was in Australia with his aunt ( which was a PR at that time) an me being

Australian citizen and had no problems granted the first time and we spend 4 weeks in Germany

Residing in a country as a student is very different from visiting a country for a holiday.

Which is why I suggested calling the Visa application centre or the Swiss Embassy, and provided the contact numbers.
However the fact remains that applicants should normally apply in their country of residence, not one they’re visiting.

Yes, VFS are the appointed agents, but if an applicant doesn’t want to use VFS they can submit directly to the Regional Consular Centre in Bangkok, and save the 668 Baht service fee.
The option is detailed on the Embassy website.
For both options an appointment is mandatory.

"In Australia for many years on a student visa."

There's the rub; he may not have official Australia residency, but he lives in Australia with a student visa. So as far as the Schengen visa rules, and many others such as the UK immigration rules, are concerned he is resident in Australia and so can apply in Australia.

A visit visa holder is not classed as a resident and so cannot apply in the country they are visiting, except in the circumstances described by Donutz earlier.
