leaving the tailgate down.

Featured Replies

Heading from Pattaya to Buriram next weekend and want to take 2 scooters with me but to do that I need to leave the tailgate open as the pickup tub is 200mm too short.

Will this frowned upon by the police ?

Great idea but this will be a one off, next motoGP I'll have my bike licence (and a proper bike) and will ride up with the  other guys going.

Took my HD from Pattaya to Chiang Mai. Used Hiway 7 and the Ring road, Hiway 1.

No issues. Had police cars - both RTP and Hiway - pass me. Nada

Why would you not just drive it?

Just asking...

Just employ  couple of young Thai males to sit precariously on the sides of the pick-up and you'll be ignored by anyone regulating  safety issues

Iam following a few guys on bikes so gotta take the long way due to Benzine 95 availablity and cannot ride bikes on motorway.

but good to hear the police did not hassle you, I figured it was ok but this being Thailand and all.... I picked up a GSXR1000 a few years ago from Kon Kaen and got hassled cause it was an uncovered load.......

Painless. Tailgate down, no cover, truck full of boxes, as was the back seat.

But you know LOS ... depends on the height of the tide, phases of the moon, alignment of the planets ...

i would carry some sort of authorisation to have the bikes, ie. signed copy of books

I remember the first time I got pulled over about 13 yers ago, I was very nervouse and thought I was screwed,, Bib asked fo 200 bht,  I heard the number 200 and thinking I was still in the States almost had a heart attack. being a newby asked my then GF now longtime wife, how much it was in dollars. she said "about $6.00", I was so happy I told her to give him 300 bht LOL.

Still a bargain in Thailand IMO.????

Your supposed to tie a red flag or rag to the load overhanging the truck bed.

Nah, 304.

A few years back, I had a cop at an overnight traffic stop on the 304, south of Korat want money because the 6 tall, covered, potted bushes in the bed of my pickup (tailgate up) were "too tall".

It went like this.

1 ) Aha! farang = low-hanging fruit, must stop.

2 ) License ok = Dammit!

3 ) Tax sticker OK = Dammit!!

4 ) Tailgate secured = Dammit!!!

5 ) Load covered = Dammit!!!!

6 ) Aha! Too tall! = Gotcha!... song loy.

7 ) Farang shows empty wallet =  Dammit!!!!!

"Bpy! Bpy!! Bpy!!!"

Good idea. It first happened to me on another, daylight shake down. The empty wallet was inadvertent but got me quickly shooed back into the traffic flow. I used to get quite worried if I only had 1000 baht bills and the nice policeman couldn't make change. Now I know better and only keep maybe a couple or three 20's in the wallet if I am road-tripping.
