Thaicom, PTTEP units to develop drones for farming

Thai Advance Innovation Company Limited (Thai AI), a subsidiary of Thaicom, will cooperate with Robotics Ventures Company Limited (ARV) on the development of cost-effective and easy-to-use drone technology for the agriculture sector, the Thai satellite operator has announced.

 

ARV is a subsidiary of PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited (PTTEP). 

 

By leveraging smart farming technology, the agro drones will contribute to a more sustainable agriculture ecosystem, resulting in less impact from chemicals, lower production costs, and improved quality of life for farmers. It will also boost international competitiveness of the local sector.

 

Anant Kaewruamvongs, Chief Executive Officer Thaicom, said Thai AI and ARV share the same objectives to solve the problems in Thailand’s agricultural sector. The partnership aims to sustain Thailand's leading position in APAC’s agricultural sector and improve productivity through the development and marketing of smart farming technology that benefits the ecosystem and people making a living out of farming.

 

"And, as we are defining our new vision and making inroads into new business areas, we have begun investing in smart digital solutions for a better life.

 

Our subsidiary Thai AI plays an important role for us in the expansion of our business into new markets and in creating strategic partnerships with next generation smart technology companies such as ARV,” he added.

 

Thana Slanvetpan, general manager of ARV, said the company is very excited to welcome Thaicom as a partner. "We share the same goal of a better future through the development of smart technology. ARV’s know-how and vast experience in both hardware and software drone technology make this partnership ideal for business growth and helping farmers improve agricultural productivity”.

I was hoping for a few words about what the drones are supposed to do.

Perhaps the technology is so forward-looking that it will spot where the weeds are about to grow before they even appear above ground, allowing farmers to laser the spots without leaving their plate of somtam.

Selective crop spraying by drone? If its the usual camera carrying machine the farmers get to see an overhead picture of his crop without walking out to the field. Is that it?

They could sell them to the Navy who earlier announce an order for a couple of drones.  Strangely just returned to the Bangkok Post web site where I read the story thirty minutes ago to quote the figures and the story has disappeared!  Obviously deemed FALSE News.

Must be a subject of 'national security'.

Such technology has been in use in other countries for more than a few years.  Did the Thais copy any of that and claim it as their own as they have done for many other things.

Before copy catting this technology into Thailand and proclaiming their great idea, they should have first noticed the thai farming model is tiny family run plots, just 10 rai give or take, not mega thousands of rai farms like the developed world. I can't imagine somchai toying with one of these and getting anything more than the human eye already provides. Maybe it comes down to that "improved quality of life" where they don't have to walk 100 meters from their motorcycle anymore. And if this is such a great world changing idea then what about a simple kite? Why does it have to be a drone? There seems to be fascination with the machine here, not what it will actually accomplish.

Thats a lot of words to say very little.

 

I'm pretty sure that drone in the picture is a very expensive drone.

 

What do they need anymore than a DJI drone?

Old Macdonald had a farm buzz buzz buzz buzz buzz....With a buzz word here and a buzz word there and every where a buzz word.... 

I am pretty sure they will be used to SPRAY PESTICIDES

What can those Drones do? Replace a Tractor? Pull the weeds out?Cultivate the Paddock ? Plant Rice/sugar cane ?plant rubber trees ? fertilize all the crops / round up the Buffalos? The drones are Toys how many would a farmer need? Who's gonna fly them? the farmer needs to Employ people to fly them so what's the use ?   Someone's having Brain failure .

The drones will be deployed straight to the skies and spray molasses preemptively to stop PM pollution
