Making me think going to Udon on it is not such a good thing. No pics as I was in the farm when the tyre fix man came. 160 baht fee. I’d only expect a tyre to come off the rim if under inflated Owl ? I have spotted a couple of ev motorcycles, today, I’m not so sharp on picking out the cars though. How is your 3 wheeler going otherwise ? 1

HighPriority Posted June 2, 2024 Posted June 2, 2024 Apologies if I’m highjacking your thread Mr Owl, please let me know if I’m out of order. 1
Popular Post owl sees all Posted June 2, 2024 Author Popular Post Posted June 2, 2024 Owl Log - Sunday 02-06-2024 Champions League final last evening. Went to bed early so didn't watch it. Good game evidently. Now in the 'Predict the Football' Ch Lg contest there were nearly 8 thousand entries. And who won? Drum role for Mr Owl, if you please, Mr MagGoo. And a nice trophy. In the post as I type. I'll not say what the first prize was worth in money terms, as the wife might stumble across my computer at the wrong moment, while I'm getting a drink from the fridge or something. And would naturally demand her share. As Thai wives do. All in all, not a bad week. Sold some rice at a very decent price. Got a drop of rain, and made myself a new chogchog. There wasn't anything wrong with the old one. But I'll keep the new one at the palm farm. So it will always be handy when I go. Our euca farm is a magnet for the wold mushroom pickers. In Essex we picked these mushrooms and called them magic mushrooms. They look so alike. Must try some. Soo wanted to borrow 10 sacks of rice for sowing. Mrs Owl reckoned we only needed 7 sacks to see us through to the harvest. So we sorted out the rice store. Had 16 sacks extra to take to Ban Dung. And on to the rice whole-seller in Ban Dung. Very quiet. We were the only ones there. At harvest time there would be vehicles queuing outside. Worked out at 365 baht a sack for sticky rice, and a whopping 416 baht for Thai rice. Robert joins me every time I go out. Although I don't go very far. Only to the PVC shop, or the farm. He knows the way to the farm, and if I try to sneak out to the farm without him, he jumps the house fence, and joins me later. Someone has dumped building trash, near where the school bus stops to pick up the children. Disgraceful! One morning last week a pick-up came round selling fingerlings. Just pla nin, and a fish I didn't recognise. Didn't get any. Last Monday, we all went to /ban Dung cause Mildred had lost her ID card, and it had to be replaced. So a visit to the Government offices. No big deal. Except the wait. Got there for 8-30 and the ladies came out at 11-30. So three hours. It was that busy. I stayed mostly outside, fed the fish, and had a wander about. Had some dog biscuit in the Mazza. So dropped a bit in. The biggest fish I saw was only 6 inches (15cm) long . Wandered over to the statue opposite. Neither Mrs Owl or Mildred knew who the guy was (asked since). Out of curiosity, I'll try to find out. Down one of the sois at the back of the Government buildings were a couple of sad looking dwellings. And when I was in the rice place, I spotted another. Real shame to see once proud houses uncared for, and falling apart. Bought 16 sacks of cow poopoo on Saturday (yesterday). Loaded them onto the Mazza and dropped them by the new water tanks. A family of four lives in this house. No leccy. No solar. Above the cows. Mildred passed the time by feeding the farm dogs. The little one looks sick to me. Maybe just not enough grub. Spotted a strange guy at his farm in the week. Very scary. Having the long grass cut around the farm house and ponds. Soo is doing the biz. Although off on a smoke, or Lao khow break, when I got there. About three days work in all. Looks so much better after a grass cut. But only lasts for 6/7 weeks, before needing another trim . As usual, when we went to Ban Dung, we had to visit the market. Didn't get any prawns. So expensive But did get 10 sticks of sausage for me supper. 5 baht a stick. That's more like it. 50 baht for a good meal. Who needs fancy prawns? Dear me. Has Kun given up on the charcoal for this year? The place is falling apart. Two doors away (down town) from us, they have marked out for a house. Pond number 5 looks great. The fish are very lively. MOVIE nin00.mp4 +++++ Well done Real Madrid. 15 times a winner of Europe's top trophy. Villa to win next season; mark my words. +++++ Mildred not at school tomorrow. Might take a trip over to the next but one village to see how me motor bike is doing. Not heard a word. +++++ What is going on in this mad world? Moscow under attack. And the Ruskies threatening to sever the underwater fibre optic cables linking Europe with Nth America. I've got me 7 metre deep well at the farm to dive into. We are only 7km from the huge Voice of America' transmitting station. so that's sure to get a rocket or two, if it kicks off. National Service in the UK. Can see that being popular. +++++ Been a good week. No whackings from Mrs Owl. Delivered rice and cow poopoo in the Mazza. Solar pumps working well. Turned the palm one off last Sunday for two days. +++++ Lady came for her usual 3k baht. The deal is that she gives us back 12 sacks at harvest. +++++ Pook - Mrs Owl's sister - gave me back 20k of the 35k I loaned her earlier this year. +++++ Waiting for two Lazada deliveries today. Fish oil and cat food. The delivery people phoned yesterday and promised this afternoon. +++++ Election fever is high in the UK. TBH, although I'm a paid up Labour Party member, I don't like, or trust, Sir K Starmer. Didn't do right with either Savile or Assange for me. +++++ Overcast and very warm. No rain. The Thai metro office says the rain, as at the start of June, is 26% down on average, for the year so far. +++++ Doing a new thing now. Once a week I'm 'overdosing' on vitamin C. Did it a couple of times last month, and after the initial detox shock, I'm feeling better. Can't expect to graft at the farm for a few hours every day if you are not at your best. Only one thing left to say; bye ya'll. 3

HighPriority Posted June 2, 2024 Posted June 2, 2024 Owl, your long post is sensational! It’s surely worthy of more than 6 reposts though…? 🤣🤣 I showed some of your pics to Mrs HP and her sister Pakhapai and they say the fish you pic’d were “boy and girl” fish, Pla Nin. I however assume you didn’t get a pic of the fish you didn’t know ? As to your statue, I zoomed in and to me it looks like Rama 5 the butterfly guy… the sisters agree, which may mean not too much… 😎 Did you actually miss the rain last night ? It didn’t pour but was a steady drizzle from about 7pm until dawn, at least here anyway. Brother says it was a good drop to get the rice to germinate.

We fly into Don Muang, travel over towards Swampy, hopefully meeting Mrs HP’s other sister somewhere before getting to Swampy and sending brother and Leo back to Udon Thani, then we head to Phuket, arriving almost midnight, I am SO looking forward to this… 😎 Its also likely the LAST time Mrs HP gets to travel plan… Keep warm you guys, I’m going to entertain the family by doing another farang raindance that worked a treat last night 👍🏼 🤣🤣 4

I did good with that competition. Did OK with a couple of others. Scottish Prem and Spanish; made top 10. But the EP???!!! finished outside the first 1000. TBH, it was the earlier rounds that won it for me in the Ch Lg comp. One week I got 5 correct scores out of 8 matches. At semi and final stage I only got the result; no correct score. But I had a good lead by then. I've had a couple of messages asking me to join their private leagues for next season. That's fame for ya. 1 1

What I recall about the front, at Phon Paisai was the 'Buddha cave'. Did you visit it HP? Very lucky spot. Ah yes!! Kham Chanod. Been there a many of times, but not in the last couple of years. They come from all over to visit. Seen plenty of Chinese there in the past. Heard the monks were looking for some cats a few years back. Bit of a rat problem on the island. We looked after 40+ at that time. We took 10 to the site. Went back there a few months later and one of the cats recognised me and came over for a big 'hi there' stroke. Beautiful moment. Where you visited today has a dark secret (perhaps not so secret now-a-days) history. A big massacre took place there a while back. There is a film; ''Ghosts of Kham Chanod(t)'' Think I've got that right. Eerie film all right. There was a fish pond there many moons ago, with absolutely thousands of fish. I'll dig out the vid and post it. ps --- great place to buy a lottery ticket. Towards the draw dates there are sometimes 100 sellers. Can't go wrong with thousands of numbers to choose from. 1

What I have learned is that it’s very hard to find any information beyond the Naga legend, frustratingly so ! I did find this entertaining review of the place: https://www.giunca.com/EdWorld/2019/10/30/wat-kham-chanot-and-the-legend-of-the-giant-serpents/ Which contained this link to possibly the movie you mentioned Owl ? A 2007 Thai horror movie trailer: https://youtu.be/4Aly6kAtZIg?si=vfyAvDznzrQsOMhP Looks like it might be worth an hour or two to watch the full movie. Wiki had no information about the place 🤔 When I was there what really struck me was that it felt like a military operation, I didn’t see any monks on the island (we didn’t comb the place, it was a relatively quick visit) but plenty of “paramilitary types” When we entered the island there was a guy chanting away like a monk but when I located him he wasn’t robed ? EDIT: “Monk” was decently attired 🤣 The above link says it is a temple and a monk blessing, but my wife when I questioned her (I know… I know… 😎) told me it wasn’t a temple and they were just security… 🤷🏼♂️ I came to the conclusion it was a military cashcow 😎 I assume the Naga offerings all get put on a truck and sold back to the vendors to touch up and resell…? So many questions 🤔 Maybe farang tink too much, geez I hope I didn’t miss the lucky numbers. Cheers

Northern Isaan was a mix of Isaan people and Laoans, Chinese and Burmese. On the whole they got on well together, mixed, bred and generally got on with life. The Thai powers back in Ayutthaya didn't seem too bothered by it all. But a member of the royalty, Prince Prajak - brother of Rama 5 - got an army together to drive the Laotians back across the Mekong. The massacre at Kham Chanot was part of that drive. This era was the founding of the city of Udon Thani. Prince Prajek called it the 'City of the North', and it gradually grew to what is is today; helped, much later, by US dosh; post WW11. A visit the Museum in Vientiane seems to depict a different story. One of great victories. As with most history; complicated, confused but non-the-less very interesting. I'm pretty sure you will be 6 million baht better off come the 16th of the month HP. 1

Popular Post owl sees all Posted June 10, 2024 Author Popular Post Posted June 10, 2024 It's Monday the 10th of June 2024 and this is the Owl Log. The biggest event of the week took place over two days; Wednesday and Thursday. Mrs Owl decided - right out of the blue it seems - that the trees at the front of the house needed trimming. I wasn't in disagreement about it. We have quite a few leccy wires at the front, and, well, best to be on the safe side. So a price was sorted with Soo and E, and away they went. Storm on the way. Grand job lads. But where is all that water coming from? A log cracked the water pipe. No problem. Soon fixed. Then it was clean up time. Yesterday, took 6 sacks of leaves and twigs to the farm. there is still another 4 or five. Do them later in the week. Just chuck them out and empty the contents. While I was in the paddy, I tided it up a bit. Back at the village the twins were having transport problems. ''Is it serious Nadille?'' ''Yes it' is. Thanks for inquiring farang. But, I have the tools to fix it.'' Nadene getting the reserve transport ready. Reliable village transport is so important these days. More crickets. Som fixing up the cricket house. Moved location. They seem happy enough. I spoke too soon about the Avoes dying. One lives on. Just about. Rice season is underway. And it looks fantastic. The ponds look great now the grass has been cut. Started utilising the cow poo poo. Run water into the sacks to get the nutrients down to the palms. These channels travel a couple of hundred metres down the palm farm. Sometimes a nice surprise. No idea, what snake it is. Didn't hurt it. Probably still there. The leaning tree is looking cool. Will it fall this year? Saw 5 piglets out and about last week. Hope to see them running about in the soi soon. They get on well with the chickens. The new building, just along from us, has seen action. Buffaloes all around the village. Three different herds. Snapped two of them. These to the east. And the northern herd. Plenty of chickens next to our house. They are not bothered by Robert and Oscar now, like they were when the dogs were little, and used to chase everything. Kun has put a new roof on his charcoal house. +++++ Won one; lost one. England's build up to the Euros taking shape. Starts next week. Or this week? +++++ Been having trouble with the computer for a couple of weeks. Think I've sussed it. It's the extension lead. I'll get a new on when in Ban Dung tomorrow. +++++ Another problem with the leccy bike. Same tyre. Took it round to the shop and put the inner-tube in. All seems OK. Good job we had one. Will get two more tomorrow. Just in case. Plenty of little drops of rain. No big storms our way. But they have had a couple in Udon. +++++ Only one thing left to say; bye ya'll; VID chogchog.mp4 7

Popular Post owl sees all Posted June 17, 2024 Author Popular Post Posted June 17, 2024 It's Monday the 17th of June 2024. This is the Owl Log. Today was the first morning for a week I've been well enough to walk Mildred to her bus. This sprightly body of mine didn't like something. No farm for 4 days too. Must have picked up a 'nasty' from somewhere. But as they say; life must go on. Feeling much better right now. Did a really silly thing when I did go to the farm on Saturday. I loaded the last 4 sacks of leaves onto the Mazza, along with fish food, rice for the chickens and some dog biscuit for Happy. Palm farm first. Sorted out Happy with some grub, changed the solar water over to do a new section, and it was onto the paddy to chuck out the sacks of leaves. Did just that. But also the fish food sack got chucked. Dear me! Spent the next 20 minutes trying to rescue the soggy fish pellet. And by the time it was feed the fish; the pellet was no more; just a mush. So a simple task like throwing fish pellet into the ponds took ages. Hope the fish didn't get too upset having to wait. Or their change of diet. Nearly had a death on me hands. Just getting out of the paddy, after collecting the soggy fish pellet, and was just about to put me hand on a tree to drag out the sack?? If I'd put me hand on it, I would surely have hurt, or even killed it. Pond 6 has had the solar water running into it for a week now. The level is only 20cms (8 inches) below the pipes. Hope to see the water flowing from 6 to 5 when I go along later today. As long as the voltage getting to the pump is over 75+, the water will flow. This reading 77/78ish. It was all happening at 7 this morning. The poopoo wagon hard at it. And in our soi? Big Mango Lady supervising. Anyone there? Pineapple could be ready for harvest. Has gone all yellow, and flopped over. Cut it off later today. Went to the corner of number one farm to take the 3 monthly pics. The big euca by the fence has certainly put on a bit of weight. Don't think I will ever cut it. Just across the dirt track from the euca trees!? A bewildered Red fan? No! Of course not. Just another scarecrow. A fair bit of effort gone into it though. Birds are scared enough. Didn't see any around. The two houses to the far north of the village are looking good. +++++ England kick off their Euro Campaign with a comfortable win. Will be champions for sure this year. +++++ Me poorly. And the wife has not been at her peak this past week. No whackings for me. A result that, but, strangely quiet. She says she is a bit better this morning though. So I can expect a few jabs later. +++++ My two new leads have arrived. One for the acer laptop, and the other, an extension lead that incorporates both AC and UBS. That should be the end of my computer problems. +++++ Been looking to get a new compact Digital Camera. The one I quite like is the Vivitar VES529. Rechargeable. 16mpix. Can't find it for sale in Thailand so far. Tried Lazada. Would expect to pay about 2.5/3k baht. I'll keep looking. The camera on my new mobile is just not good enough. I've tried all the 200 setting combinations and,,, well,,, if not rubbish,,, then just plain poor quality results. The Vititar is just like the one I had in the UK 20 years ago. Took great pics. +++++ I see the Irish are being encouraged to come to Thailand. Heavy drinking lot they are. Loud. Take no nonsense from anyone. That's just the girls. +++++ No rain to speak of for the last 10 days. For once I'm not fretting. Water all under control with both solar systems working well. +++++ No more problems with the leccy 3-wheeler. Have two spare inner-tubes at the ready though. I've only been out on it once. +++++ Only one thing left to say; bye ya'll. +++++ Mildred's latest work, came a cropper. Almost torn in half. Patched it up best we could. Can just see the top of the tear. Painting number 89. www.mildredart.com 7
