A group of farmers dressed in black gathered in front Government House today (November 26) to submit a petition to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha stating their opposition to the banning of Paraquat, Chlorpyrifos and Glyphosate, and explaining they wanted to continue using the chemicals under the proper procedures.

After submitting the letter, the group moved from the Government House to the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives and Ministry of Industry to put pressure on officials to review the ban.

I can feel a U-turn coming on,or at the very least an extension

to use these chemicals, the farmers and the chemical corporations

are a strong lobby, and the Government is afraid of losing the Farmers

support, which is why they keep throwing money at them.

This is the problem, farmers have continually abused the procedures and ignored the precautions for decades, over-spaying and using far higher concentrates than stated, thus actually poisoning the crops & land.

Many tests have been carried out over years to prove high levels of residue on products at markets & other outlets but farmers have carried on regardless.. they have proved not to be trustworthy.

So now it's a case of you can't behave yourselves & be trusted to spray correctly so now it's a ban !

Stop your crying you have yourselves to blame !!!!

How I wish I could be confident of eating healthy fruit & vegetables... instead of being forced to eat poisoned produce just to satisfy the "poor Thai farmer".

Not sure what your problem is,just look for the organic label on the packaging.

Why not start organic farming without any chemicals? I strongly believe there is huge market for vegetables, even when they are more expensive. Thais just have to spend less money on smart phones and the latest fashion gimmicks. The so called "Oeko Markt" in my hometown in Germany, solely selling DEMETER controlled veggies and fruit, are normally sold out by noon. But thinking outside the box, has never been a Thai thing.

I don't have a problem... unless eating something that has been saturated in poisons.

As for an organic label... remember where you are, where everything can be bought for a price!

You must be fading away to a block of flats by now not trusting organic food.

I miss trust it with good reason.... I live in a rural area on the outskirts of a large market town west of Bangkok.

A farmer not far from me produces rice and a mixture of green vegetables which are sold to the local market traders and some packaged for a wholesale trader.

He claims to be organic, has certification from the ministry/government bodies, labels to stick on bags.

But I witness him spraying with complete disregard for the "organic label".

I have been to his farm, walked around with him as a neighbour, he's shown me the sprays that he has in his store to show the inspector... all legit.

But the stuff he uses is hidden away out of sight, as he says the alternatives are useless, he uses the deadly 3 as we've seen will hopefully be banned!

I miss-trust with good reason.

I grow organically, but the results can be poor. My courgettes as normal are now looking like lace, after beetle attack. Organic pesticide sprays were useless, as usual. So far i have only had one courgette crop in 4 years, rest 100% wiped out. Just using up my last seeds, will not buy more. Similar results on half my crops. Overall i loose about 60% of everything to pests. I know why my m-in-l just grows bitter thai leafy veg, only things that are usually reliable. So far only have 2 fairly reliable crops - lettuce and okra. Good job i do not grow for an income!

Most western vegetable are not easy to grow in the tropics but some do very well. Tropical perennial are much easier but take a bit more time to get started.
