Incentives explored to encourage purchase of new vehicles

The Excise Department, which is aiming to encourage car owners to buy a new vehicle through incentives and thus reduce the number of polluting motors on the road, will discuss its proposals with relevant government agencies and the private sector on December 16, President of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI)’s Automotive Industry Club, Khanchit Chaisupho, revealed the department’s plan at a recent seminar exploring the direction of the automobile market organised by Thai Automotive Journalists Association (TAJA).

He said that the plan will look two major problems, namely the current car market and environmental problems, including the problem of PM 2.5 dust particles from old cars, which are becoming increasingly serious.

“It was proposed that auto components, such as car batteries, be added to the draft management plan for electrical appliances and electronic devices,” he explained. “Cars in our country are expensive so consumers tend to use old cars for a long time. The department suggested that they should launch incentive measures to encourage people to change cars.”

He added that they will discuss with their partners the types of measures that could be introduced to reduce the cost burden on consumers

Many countries also use this concept in various ways. The most famous is perhaps the “Cash for Clunkers” issued by the US government under Barack Obama in 2009, which encouraged people to exchange old cars for new to stimulate the economy.

More debt ,More cars on the road, just what we need,

people with beat up cars are driving them because they

cannot afford to buy a new one,so unless the Government

is going to give them a new one free...nothings going to change.

i see many a thrashed oil burning, diesel spewing new pickup here and there. Leave it with a thai for a while.. same, same..

Good news wife is thinking of a car purchase over the next year ????

There is a big difference between a thrashed old vehicle and a relatively new one, both spewing black smoke. Poor maintenance of diesel injectors is the main cause.  There are thousands of beat up heaps on Thai roads that ought to be crushed, but suggesting that Thais go out and buy a new vehicle is madness when average debt is running very high. Better to either encourage people to better maintain their present vehicles or failing that hit them with FAILED certificates when vehicles are supposedly tested once a year at Government sponsored stations.

I rather see Thais peddling on their brand new E bikes.

I think the Thai motor show is on this December. the motor industry is already down by 17 per cent this year, so they want to encourage new car sales because of that as well.

bring in proper MOTs like the UK.

Let's start with new city buses for BKK, how about those 3500 buses Prayuth was going to buy 5 years ago? Where are they?

Re-educating Thais low-mileage secondhand cars would be better for their pocket, perhaps? Silly me, I forgot - those low mileage cars are repossessions.

You want pollution down? start in the bigger cities with the old bus and old truck, in the rest of the country with doing something about the fires that are everywhere. No need to name places or regions, everybody knows, except the government.  I drive a diesel and it's even cleaner then some cars on gasoline!

I'm suggesting free lifetime health insurance with every sale. I could be in the market with an incentive like that.

Encourage car purchase means More loans in the market, what happen If loans default? Something big will happen.

They do, but don't expect Thailand to make electric bikes easy and affordable to get.

Unless Somchai develops one.

But there are some really cool E Bikes around

Please NO MORE DIESELS...

If there is funding available Thailand should indeed be looking to the future - electric cars and bicycles at a reasonable price, safe routes for the cyclists - a chance to be up there leading the way

Certainly there are few people who can afford to buy a new vehicle, because instead you don't help people make the vehicle cleaner on their property?

This is fantastic news. I'm looking to buy a used car next year. There will be more low miles repo's available when people can't keep up with the payments.

To me , with the Thai mentality sometimes, the best way to sell more newer cars and pick ups is to write more off. Increase the speed on the road to 200MPH with a 150 min speed, put more U turns on motorways, have fly overs with sudden road endings, put the fast trains on the floor and raise alcohol level to 'plastered, unable to walk' as minimum breath test would be my suggestions.
