Don’t kill the golden goose! Tax reforms may drive away expats
Copy of a post I did in another group: So, a lot of this has to do with reporting and ability to enforce this potential new Thai tax situation for us as Thai tax residents. I am an American citizen. Thailand participates in FATCA Model 1 where Thailand reports my accounts in Thailand to the US but the US does not report accounts to Thailand. The US does not participate in CRS so no information to Thailand through that system. If Thailand wants a Tax Clearance letter from the US IRS, that only says I have filed my returns and that they are paid up. It offers no information about income, so nothing there. So, Thailand trying to find out what I have in the US is impossible at this point. Going forward, almost all money being brought into Thailand will be my Social Security for my wife and I (which is now being deposited into its own separate bank account) which is not taxable to Thailand according to the DTA. However, If they ask for my US income tax returns, I'm leaving. I only bring in what I need to live on and qualify for extensions (non-O based on marriage, so use that to live on after stamp), the rest stays in the US for investing and such. -

You are confusing citizens of Israel with citizens of the United States who happen to be Jewish. What difference does it make to a Jewish American where the US embassy in Israel is located? I have a great many American friends who are Jewish, and they all support Harris for the very good reason that they believe Trump’s plans for a second administration to be disastrous for US democracy, regardless of what his relations are with the Israeli government. As for moving the embassy, why was this a good idea? It was done only bilaterally, with no coordination with scores of other nations that have friendly relations with Israel, who should have been on board with it; European commenters called the move, at best, “unwise” or “inflammatory.” It was a “loose cannon” kind of move. Trump also recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights and said that he would support Israeli annexation of at least parts of the West Bank. This is worse than inflammatory; this puts Israel itself in a precarious situation vis-à-vis its neighbors, and global support more generally. Look what’s happening there now. But what does Trump care about Israel, or Jewish people? Nothing. His only reason for such reckless moves is to attract big donations from Sheldon and Miriam Adelson. -
