Has anything been done in recent years to improve situation of expats here? If the answer is negative perhaps that explains the departure.

It's hilarious the amount of winging that goes on on these forums about the inadequacies of Thailand. The moment the government starts to enforce the rules... the whiners/wingers are the first to cry foul. Are all of the changes good? Absolutely not, TM30 comes to mind, but many of the changes like requiring health insurance, check points for license and helmets, littering at beaches, just to name a few are good progress. Whiners I think just like to whine.

I am wondering if the OP's friends were mostly clustered around Bangkok, because if anything rents in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai are getting cheaper. Haven't really noticed any serious hikes in other costs. The exchange rate is another factor.

Some Americans I used to know in CM have left because the income they swore to with their Embassy evaporated along with the letters.

Earth to lacessit! Are you not aware of the fact that due to the pollution, Chang Mai is no longer a livable option??????

crawl back under that rock! Or perhaps you're trapped indoors with the filters on?

Interesting how when people leave, other people arrive, life is about movement and experience

No Visa changes if you keep 800K in a Thai bank account.

Cost of living in Thailand is 1/4 - 1/3 the cost of living in the USA.

Many other benefits in LOS regarding female companionship as well ????

Some just dopt the Thai attitude of smiling at everything , shrugging their shoulders and saying Marbelie .

If people are dissatisfied with certain elements of their lives, they either change them ..........or just smile, shrug their shoulders and say marbelie

$4 too high, I can get same same you for $1 k.

you asking waayyy too much. Then I ask them for their line ID.

...and the fact that they do want have their money tied up in Thai Banks ( no guaranteed protection of funds by reserve bank, being a lender of last resort)  instead of their overseas trusted institutions

Fact?  What fact is that then?

The DPA currently provides protection for registered institutions up to B5m, just a bit more than the maximum B0.8m needed for extentions!

Thing is, even for 1K they are still too old and too fat most times hehehe. Better buy a bottle of red for that in a club with students and get laid free.

Likely that as the US embassy no longer issues income affidavits they can't prove income. Majority of "I'm leaving Thailand" threads are started by Americans.

It will be really, really, really good for everyone if all those Navy Seals, CIA, Delta Force, ex tough city policemen etc just go home and waste their own oxygen. At least the Brits fight, not just talk about one they had at school. ????

how could you tell? were they walking around sucking on roll mops or was it their wooden clogs ?

Speaking 4 languages, including Dutch as it is my home country, it is pretty easy to tell. Specially with those screaming feminists of today.

And the old quarters aren't really that big, there were a lot for real.

True, but it one of the few countries where the girls don't have a repulsive entitled attitude, an ar*e like a bus and man's haircut.

Apparently expats just left  to places where they can play Bridge peacefully.

The people I know that have left all have money, some with two or three properties here that they have now sold...yet the guys with no money using an agent for extensions are still here on the same bar stool...if you have money and do your visa yourself it isn't a breeze and is numerous visits, in fact almost once a month....yet no money, use agent, its a breeze....you really need to understand this, tightening visa rules, TMs etc is driving away people WITH money

Strongly suspect this assessment is accurate. If a person was fudging their income and really couldn't meet Thailand's financial requirements for a visa, as long as there was an avenue to remain here (visa agents) that would seem to be a preferable option than returning home and trying to subsist on whatever meager resources you had. Also agree with your assessment that the TM-30 requirement, which is so offensive and disrespectful to a person's right to privacy and freedom of movement, is what's driving away many people, including those who are more affluent.

Yeah mate, not what it was before. I am stunned to see how cheap China is if I compare it to Thailand. It's very much different.

Can one rent a BG for a day, a week or a month, as in LOS? I was never into short time.

Take it from me that my life in Chiang Mai was far and away superior in every aspect than living in NZ for the same amount of money. I had a life there, here I exist and wait for the end. The only difference is that should I be hospitalised it's free here. Just seeing a Dr is way more expensive than in LOS, and only get 10 minutes for one payment. No discounts for pensioners.

I misread his post and deleted mine.

There may be other things in the world than sex, but none as enjoyable. If one doesn't think so one isn't doing it right.

Why would I want to talk about sex with someone that apparently doesn't like prostitution? IMO no married person gets great sex, and after a year they are lucky to get sex at all.
