(Reuters) - The British rock singer Rod Stewart and his eldest son, Sean, are facing battery charges for an altercation with a hotel security guard at a New Year's Eve party in Palm Beach, Florida, local media reported.

The two men are due to appear in court on Sunday to each face a single charge of simple battery, the Palm Beach Post reported.

Representatives for Stewart, known for his 1970s hits "Maggie May" and "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?," did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

According to a police report, the Stewarts were upset at their family being denied entry to a private event in a children's area at the Breakers hotel.

Sean Stewart, 39, pushed the security guard, and Rod Stewart, 74, then punched the guard in the ribs, the Palm Beach Police Department said in its report. The episode was recorded by surveillance cameras, the report said.

Rod Stewart apologized for his behavior, the report said.

Ohh my God, how can that be?

Stewart at 74, is fading a bit, and even with over $240 million in assets and cash, he is still a bit grumpy at times.

Come on, let my kids into the kiddie area. Please. What? No? Nobody says no to me.

I saw a profile of Stewart on TV a while back. Recall he grew up in kind of a rough environment and was known for his rough housing in his youthful days... The allegation that he threw a punch now at age 74 is pretty amusing....

The only time I ever saw Rod in the flesh he would have been about 18 years old sitting on the pavement in Portobello road and busking with a guitar. He hasn't changed much.

Sounds to me like a "Jobs worth" got hit for being a D. I do not think Rod was gatecrashing a kids party. Are Americans that soft now that being hit by a 74 year old OAP is worth the drama oh wait he is rich and he smells money. A real man would brush it off and take the apology.

Many years ago I knew a guy who worked as a security guy for Man Utd, he freely admits that he knows absolutely nothing about football.

One day he was told to stand at the door to the board room at Old Trafford and that nobody was allowed in, not even the Queen!, there was a board meeting going on, Sir Alex Ferguson was at the meeting.

A guy walks up a while later and demands entry which Carl denies, partly cos he didn't know who the guy was. (Carl's about 6 foot 4 and big built).

Turns out the guy who wanted to go into the board room was Bryan Robson.

Carl was just doing his job, a "Jobs worth".

This is hilarous! Rod Stewart just went up a notch in my mind from 0 to 1.

It's gonna look a bit ridiculous even if he is a famous singer, an old boy in his 70s getting charged for hitting a security guard. It'll be laughed out of court. Or it should be.

Where in the story did it say the guard was an American ?  Plenty of Latino guards in Miami hotels.  Why would you attack a guard at a private function if you weren't invited, that is acceptable where Rod comes from?

The only time I ever saw Rod Stewart was in the mid 70's and I never noticed him as I was smitten by Britt Ekland beside him.
