Left passport at home, staying at hotel

Lots of hotels still don't ask for them.  But it seems more and more of them are.  I bet in the high tourist areas there is more compliance with the law because the police will be scrutinizing there more.

Your Thai DL has your passport number on it!  Good reason to take the time and go to a Kodak shop have them make a xerox copy shrink the size like a credit card and laminate it for 50 baht easy to carry. Been here 15 years I never carry my passport!

I've been here 20 years  and only use my dl for flights and accommodation. If they would refuse me I would walk away and go to the next 1

They will, of course, ask for a passport. 

 

 

Next time try giving them your DL (with a smile) and say that you always keep your passport in the safe at home.

If they ask for his passport and won't accept his DL,then just go to another hotel. FYI, loads of hotels and guesthouses don't report foreigners. You'll know they will when they ask for the passport.

Hotels are now obliged to check the permission to stay of all foreigners, some may well choose to ignore that.

My wife always makes the bookings and goes to check in. In the last year or so I have more often than not been called over and asked for passport, not interested in DL or pink ID.

In the last month we have been in 3 hotels, 2 checked and 1 didn't, the 2 that checked were both in Pattaya and the one that didn't was on Laem Sing beach.

I can't imagine any hotel refusing to check me in with such a booking + my DL.

All our bookings are Agoda, used to collect the points for a free night.

Ah, I thought that when they punched the numbers in the info was sent to a huge integrated database that alerted the SWAT team if the passport showed the dastardly villain to be on overstay

Fortunate you only visit places with rows and rows of hotels!

I would say rural places are less stringent, but my experience in Bangkok and Pattaya is they want a passports off me.

My motto for my passport is the same as a old advert for a credit card that was "Don't leave home without it".

Been the same for many years due to a job I had that required me to travel to many countries. Some of them were very strict on having a passport with you if asked for it.

Having taken a trip earlier this month to 2 hotels I use on a regular basis.

1 in Hau Him and one in Pattaya.

Both of which I always book in with my pinko ID. 

However on this occasion I was not allowed to do so. Talking to check in staff they have been told by immigration no matter if the foreigner lives in Thailand with a Thai pink ID or

A Thai driving licence.

A copy of the passport must be given and they must submit it to immigration.

Two hotels miles apart both telling me the same.

I am due in BKK Tomorrow so rang my normal Hotel and yes was told the same passport required.

No big deal as I carry it anyway when away from home.

Maybe true, but any information from over 6 months ago is no longer current. 

 

Back in October, the 2 hotels I stayed at had printed signs on the front desk declaring that they needed a passport, and could no longer accept a Thai DL.  That's in contrast to 7 years of living in Thailand through 2018 when I always used my DL.  The fact that they actually printed up the signs indicates to me that something has changed.

 I want to apologize for starting this thread and leaving everybody hanging. I Indeed was allowed to use my DL. but I had my wife register the room in her name, so maybe that helped.

Now to address some of the comments.

Some people wondered why I didn't just ask at the hotel. Well the reason is is that I wasn't anywhere near the hotel when I started the thread. in fact I was in Doi Sakett and I had things to do until 9PM when I was picking up friends at the airport. So I was trying to see if I had a problem before I got to the hotel.

The hotel did have contact information on their website, but not a phone number. This does not mean it was a flea bag hotel, in fact it was one of Chiang Mai's larger and more well known hotels. Also, Agoda doesn't let you see hotel numbers because they don't want you to deal direct.
