PHUKET:-- A Cambodian man who lived in Phuket for 30 years, most of that time by using a fake ID card, has been arrested for illegally staying in the country, Immigration Bureau Chief Pol Lt Gen Sompong Chingduang announced at a press conference in Bangkok today (Jan 24).

Lt Gen Sompong identified the Cambodian man only by his nickname “Gim”.

Exactly where and when Mr Gim was taken into custody was not explained, but Lt Gen Sompong noted that Mr Gim was employed by a restaurant in Kalim, on Phuket’s west coast.

If you have lived there for 30 years and been crime-free, you deserve citizenship.

That's right DoctorG. With such news police is wasting their time, if a person lived in a place for 30 years he is automatically assimilated and deserves a citizenship.

Why do people assume he lived a crime-free life??

Yes, I'm sure, besides the false identity and his past which led to faking an ID and all that...he lived really a life like Jesus.   come on...

Not that surprising or difficult, loads of them in the country. Just got much more difficult recently only so I am afraid we will hear about it more.
Agree with other posters here though, he deserves citizenship. Most likely has been hard working and doing jobs Thais are often too lazy to do.

I don't see anybody assuming anything.

Yes, 30 years of breaking the law, he deserves to be granted citizenship!

He was probably propping up the Thai economy and supporting a village in Issan.

It's because he looked asian, we don't have that advantage.  Much harder for us to hide.  Everyone now is turning us in and easier to spot.

Maybe in Nakon Nowhere but not here. At Karon you would have difficulties to find an asian in under 15 minutes lol.

Who is 'we'?

Do you have any idea how many people of Asian origin are posting here?

30 years to discover that a Cambodian is using a false Thai identity card;
Ah! The Thai police in all its splendor ...
