I never understand envy like this.

It's nothing to do with you, why are you so concerned?

Your life will be better if you stop wishing harm on others.

And my life will be better with you on ignore.

envy?? I'm simply worried for the guy... that he's been Medically put out of the Military on such a low pension figure, and age.

Even more so, that one is on that figure, and surviving still in the UK

any other fellow Invalided Military pensioner out there would also equate with what it's like to exist, living on a purse string

not commenting on visas, but assuming you can get to thai, sure.

just depends on what sort of lifestyle you demand.

you can definitely exist on 30k baht.

find a 28-meter single room in a thai apartment block for 2500 baht/month, maybe a furnished "mansion" with ac for as little as 3000.  add 1500 for utilities, or 2500 if you need to actually use that ac.

osmosis water from machines for 2 baht, street food 35-40.

local buses 5-10 baht.

live cheaply all week, splurge on the weekend.

I'm in SanSai too, plenty of 7-11s and mom & pop stores to drink outside.

I pass out after 3 large Changs, so maximum spend under 200bht.

Although, I can reduce the spend a bit more with a small Hong Thong (160bht) rum and 2l coke (40bht).

That'll last me two afternoons.

Ha, wish I did and that would still not make it any social event with other people in town though.
Would need at least 5 large Chang to get close to passing out, even after not having been drinking for a while.

Seems the rum with coke and ice is the only good cheap deal, too bad that would result in drinking alone, not needed for me in that case.
Happy to share some with another drinker though.

How would i get a job in thailand i aint got a trade all i know is how to kill people

Possibly best to Re enlist, get them to teach you a trade, then use that when you come out, either in UK or if not a reserved occupation, Thailand.

No, it's nowhere near enough and not enough to get a retirement visa either...(you need proof of an income of at least 1500 per month for a retirement visa).

Thailand is not a great place to be poor in....in fact it is miserable being poor...and being alone which is why most guys who retire here form a stable relationship with a woman and it gets quite expensive then maintaining her family.

You should look into teaching here....they have a great need for native English speakers.

Exactly that, not even only people who retire, most who stay long term eventually get a relationship / marriage + even unexpected a child on top of it.
Then you the dream of living minimalistic, cheap and nice is broken quickly and it becomes quite expensive (story of my life hehe).

Would say teaching is the only sensible thing to do as it gets you the visa and work permit at least + even if you worked parttime and only earned 15K, your total is at least 45K and no visa costs or worries would make it just fine. Still not enough for the rest of this life with inflation nor for a family though.

If you stay single and live cheap, save the money earned by teaching 100%, you would be onto something.

I live on 27k a month, no rent to pay. That covers all the bills, food, car and 6k to the mardy bum for som tam etc money. Not so bad when you are almost 70 and you don't want a party lifestyle but in your 30's I suspect what the OP has is nowhere near enough. Teaching, oh no, the last thing Thailand wants is another fake English teacher.

They need qualified teachers with degrees and experience, not unqualified white faces with no Thai who probably have zero skills in teaching English, or anything else.

Thailand prices have been rising over the years. You could do 717 pounds per month if you stick to a smaller city or town, and avoid the bars and bar girls scene.

Bars and bar girls will eat you up and spit you out.

India, Cambodia or smaller towns in Vietnam might suit you better. Or one of the cheaper South American countries. They can be very nice also.

But no matter where you go....night life at bars...and bar girls will quickly make a huge horrible dent in your income.

To exist maybe to live NO, and nothing for emergencies, also no social security

DO NOT DO IT

It depends. If he’s elderly and not many years left....he has very little left to lose.

Take the risk. Having lived in both Thailand and Cambodia and knowing something about the countries, I would definitely take the risk if elderly and not a lot of years left and little to lose.

But if he’s younger with probably many years of life left, and with more to lose in an emergency....then yeah.

..DO NOT DO IT

So, no problem for you to get a job in Thailand..

Do you have about 20,000 GBP in cash to meet the 800K baht requirement?  Your income is way under the 65,000 baht/month method.

You would also have the expenses of travel and visa applications. As I understand it, your UK pension would be frozen after the move - no more increases for cost of living.

717 GBP/month would give you a modest lifestyle in Thailand. A bar girl would make serious inroads on that.

Your last paragraph I would agree with as long as he does not use the bars too much and buys his beer from 7-11. His pension could easily be enough depending on his lifestyle and he rents a modest fan cooled apartment.

Well i was thinking just 3 month at a time for now because i cant get retirement visa would 1000 pound per month be enough

Again it depends on your life style and being able to avoid the bar scene, except on occasion maybe.

Lol omg how do you know i live near fitzwilliam are u some kinda spy??? Serious tho can i live their on pension or is it nothing but a pipe dream?

Retirement Visa is 65,000 baht a month income required. 717 British Pounds Sterling is under half that amount so I am thinking ... not.

Posted

That equates to 28000 Baht per month. Thai average salary is 12/20,000 per month so in theory it is doable if you are prepared to live a local lifestyle. i know people who do. However, you would need to own your own house, or be prepared to pay a quarter of your income on rent and have 800,000 Baht in an account to cover your Visa requirement. Beer and Bar girls would be a luxury item. Suggest you look at Romania.

you took the words right outa my mouth ( meatloaf )

the job he's trained for already has thousands of participants in thailand, most not highly trained but just do it anyway.

You should be working at your age. At 717 you will be spanking you own monkey let along have money to afford to pay someone.  Even double that has its limitations.  When you have 3 times that, than think about the move. But thanks for the laugh. 5555

As far as I'm concerned, if you can squeeze money out of your government, falsely or truthfully, good luck to you.

No government has money. Everything is paid from tax revenue.

Guess who pays the taxes, the working man.

So happy you promote ripping off your countrymen.

Yes i savings but not quite 20k maybe save up some more.. im not over 50 so doubt i can get a retirement visa anyway im 31 its an army pension which i get so it wouldnt be frozen. I admit i like a bar girl now and again plus a few beers dont think i can live in thailand gutted ????

You need to read up on the official requirements to be able to stay in Thailand. It's not about living expenses.  You're to young to get a retirement visa and even if you were 50 years of age, you don't have enough money.
