Britain tells the EU: we shall not sell out our fishermen

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain will not sell out its fishermen as part of a trade deal with the European Union, nor will it lower its food standards for a trade agreement with the United States, British International Trade Secretary Liz Truss said on Monday.

 

French President Emmanuel Macron said last month that he will not let down French fishermen in post-Brexit trade negotiations and that France will seek compensation if it does not get the same access to British waters as before.

 

“We are not going to trade away our fishing in a deal with the EU or any other negotiating partner for that matter,” Truss said. “We are going to get a deal with the EU that does not involve selling out our fishing.”

 

She also said Britain was prepared to step away from talks with the United States if the British were unable to get an agreement they wanted but added there were huge potential benefits from a deal.

 

“In a trade deal with the U.S., we will not diminish our food safety standards and we will also not put the NHS (National Health Service) on the table,” Truss said. “If we don’t get the deal we want we will be prepared to walk away.”

It would be nice to afford decent fish and chips again in the UK. It’s  hard to believe we’re surrounded by ( or were ) fish. 

Most kids in the UK think fish comes out of tins, premixed with mayo.

Well, she is telling as it is. English fisheries are not going to be selling their fish to the EU once the no-deal brexit happens. Enough tariffs, extra paperwork with added costs, added delivery costs and delays will make sure of that.

Again truth. It's not England which puts NHS deal to the table, it's USA which does that.

 

So much rumbling coming out of this government. I wonder what is the destination this government with it's huge mandate is going to walk away to? Abyss?

Reading between the lines I would say British Fishermen will be sold down the river before the year end...

Won’t be getting any compo from the UK. They could always try the EU to subsidise French fisheries. 
What’s that, the EU has no spare cash now that the UK has left? I’m lovin it.

When I see the Brits here in Thailand happily absorb the Vietnamese Pangasius, because the Brit restaurant owner wrote Cod on the menu, I doubt they know much about fish

It does appear that the EU wants to have your cake and eat it too  regarding fishing, I understand if you leave the EU club, you can't have the same access as a club member, but that applies both ways. The EU have stated the UK must “uphold” existing reciprocal access to fishing grounds or what is known as "Status quo" but they have to understand you can't have you cake and eat it also applies to them, Once we have left the club the rules of access change

The UK fishing industry would grow significantly without even trying or doing anything extra. Simply ditching the EU quotas would permit them to keep all they catch.

This is the UKs biggest bargaining chip in EU negotiations. The potential to create riots in the EU ,blockading roads/ports on the continent,mayhem.  A good thing France especially, paralysed especially now the EU itself is under threat on the eastern side

  Nothing like sitting this one out. Seen different figures of UK trade deficit to EU  from 85 million to 124 million. Blockaded roads...perfect

Spain? Portugal? Ireland? Netherlands? Belgium? Germany? --- are very keen or just interested?

The U.K. exports up to 80% of the fish it catches, a lot of which goes to markets in the EU...

Yes, but the wealthy British owners of the fish quotas sold them years ago to European fishing companies.

Do americans have lower food standards than the Brits?

 

I never heard of that, why kind of low standards should i think of?
