WEAR A MASK Why the fear mongering? This virus gains access via mucous membranes. That includes your eyes. Most transmissions occur when people come into contact with an infected person or a surface and touch their faces. Anyway the masks most people wear (including you) are useless against transmission. Stop the <deleted>. In the last week I have seen a guy wearing a mask (he was behind the counter in a well known coffee shop) he pulled the mask down and inserted his finger up his nose. More worryingly I was at the big (Kings) hospital on Monday. The girl in the pharmacy pulled down her mask to scratch her nose.
jlwilliamsjr18
Whose fault will this be? Shut down the BTS, MRT and Buses. Reduce traffic one way in the AM and the other way in the PM. Taxis only and they need to be trained in how to disinfect their cars. Gov. also needs to subsidize participating taxis, lowering fares. MrMo
Why believe anything this report comes out with. It starts off by saying 400,000 infections by the end of next year (that's 2021) and half a dozen lines later claims there will be 400,000 the end of 2020 (that's current year). Also 400,000 (or around 5%) of the population is the good news. Please clarify Mister Editor.

Popular Post leggo
The Thai government response from the outset of this epidemic has been totally amateurish only being concerned with tourism and which has totally backfired .If they had dealt with it properly in the first place they might not have destroyed the industry and at the same time they might have contained the virus. Now they have zero tourism and an epidemic that is spirally out of control which will have devastating effects on the already unsteady economy and will take years to recover - will they learn from this, probably not . I feel for the little people who will lose their businesses, jobs and more.

Drugstore masks are NOT generally effective in preventing inhaling of viruses, that's true. But they at least do help prevent the wear from touching their nose, mouth, etc, which is a good thing. But N95 masks ARE effective against viruses, and that's why hospital and medical staff who treat CV patients are supposed to be and are wearing them. In fact, are required to wear them in most places.
jojothai
Stupid idiots. Now they are trying to scare people into taking notice, after so long telling them there was no problem and it will be gone soon. I think that they have now given the cause for the public to panic in expectation of of lockdowns. You better get out to the supermarkets to stock up. Seems pretty racist to me, when they don't give it to us. Plus, those countries don't give Thais free health care...they're treated like any other foreigners. Seems like the Thai government has shot themselves in the foot on this one. I think this whole corona virus situation could be the impetus that forces the Thai government to make some cut backs - one of them being, no more free health care for any non-Thais... You do realize that these nationals from the neighboring countries are the workers who provide Thailand with skilled labor for the jobs no Thai will do. They are also, well mostly, here on NON-LA Visa's and extensions for which they also pay a tidy sum to be added to the Thai Health Care system........saying its free makes me believe that you have no knowledge of how hard they work for what little benefits they do get and pay for vs. a Thai national. They work 7 days a week with little to no time off, and if they do take a day off loose pay. So pray tell, how is this racist to you as a non-Thai and expat?

What you cite is the issue of some people not wearing / using / handling the masks properly, which is a different issue from whether the mask itself can be effective if worn and used properly. Don't blame the tool for the ignorance of the user.

The fatality rate from it is at least 10 times normal seasonal flu. This is much more like the 1918 plague flu than a normal seasonal flu. If I sound matter of fact about this, well I was living in San Francisco when the HIV virus peaked before people even knew what it was and people were dropping like flies. That virus is hard to get and fairly easy to prevent once you know the facts. This one is super easy to get and no amount of hand washing is really going to stop it. We can slow it though. Viruses don't have passports. As a fellow SF'er this rings true. In SF, my biggest concern now is that we get the big one (earthquake) during this "burn out" stage of the virus which is projected to last between now and August (with peak in June). Come up with solution, not stupid predictions that have no basis in fact. The range of infection estimates, I'm pretty certain, is based on the modeling world health authorities have done based on past virus outbreaks. It's not an exact number, and only a range, because there are a lot of variables: different diseases are more or less contagious, affect different age groups differently, may be more or less seasonal, etc etc. And then there's the intervention issues -- governments & societies can take measures like quarantines, social distancing, etc that have the effect to cut down the infection rate, depending on how effectively and broadly they're enforced, and how early in the spread. Depending on what Thailand does now and in the coming weeks/months, where the country actually ends up is either going to be on the high or low end of those estimate ranges. Krataiboy
Health officials in Thailand have forecast that at least 400,000 people may be diagnosed with the coronavirus, COVID-19, by the end of next year. Are these, by any chance, the same health officials who haven't bothered to tell our esteemed leader that wearing a cloth mask that matches his shirt won't protect him against viruses? KKr
trying to put some numbers in perspective here. Using Today's WHO data and and 2019 population data (https://worldpopulationreview.com/countries/ ), am ranking Covid cases / 100.000 inhabitants. Calculating the subtotals by region, may give a better indication of how bad the infection spread is and of what is going on where, then just throwing absolute numbers without putting these in perspective. Thailand, official numbers ranks 92. If we were to reach the density numbers like in Switzerland, that would mean (30/.25)*177 = about 21.000 Edited March 18, 2020 by KKr clarifications

Number 6
I think it will be higher. Chinese government essentially went to martial law. All the other countries high levels of education where people understand how germs and virus are transmitted. Here they have no clue. Stunning to see how improperly masks are treated. Already heard 4 people coughing hacking on BTS MRT. They go to work. No word from wife about shutting down her building. Meanwhile my friend told me LA and OC are on lockdown. 23m people.
