Only collective action will prevent a lockdown — Anutin

Deputy Prime Minister and Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul today called for collective efforts by all Thais to fight the coronavirus pandemic which continues to ravage more than half of the countries in the world.

Speaking in an interview with ThaiPBS World, Anutin said Thailand might not need to go into lockdown like several other countries if members of the public and all agencies concerned work in concert to stem the spread of the deadly virus.

“I have to apologize to people who might be affected by the government’s measures, but ultimately we will have a clean country and healthy people. That’s why we need to adopt preventive measures, rather than play the catch me if you can game,” he said of a series of measures introduced by the government to minimize chances of coronavirus transmission.

The measures include closing of entertainment places, sport venues and schools and requirement for those arriving from overseas to have medical certificates and health insurance.

As Anutin spoke, the Public Health Ministry reported 50 new cases of coronavirus infection today, including a 6-month-old baby, bringing the total of infection cases to 322.

Asked to react to suggestions that Thailand should go into lockdown like several other countries, Anutin said the government is doing everything it can to avoid having to resort to such drastic measure.

“If we receive full cooperation from people and concerned parties, we might not have to go to that extent,” he said.

While commending the Thai public for its cooperation to fight the virus, Anutin called for more active compliance with measures and directives issued by the authorities, especially those concerning social distancing and avoidance of crowded places.

The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to carrying out all necessary measures to assure that Thai people are safe from the disease.

“That means we will be very strict in implementing all the necessary measures so that soon we will be rid of the problem and life will go back to normal,” he said.

When asked to estimate how long the crisis will last, he said: “It all depends on the cooperation of the people. If we work as one and behave according to what is suggested or recommended by the Ministry of Public Health, it will be sooner than you think. We will soon walk away nicely from this crisis”.

Therein lies the rub .. Do the population have the discipline to follow the advice being put out about keeping the distance if they must go out at all .. If not it may have to be the big stick approach ..

My only complaint is this would have been useful a month or so ago.

But to smooth out the curve and reduce transmission, this is a good thing, and I support it.

Based on his track records, sure that we will get the lockdown soon.

Indeed foreigners are not exempt from what must be a collective effort and if it has to come to more hardcore measures then they also should be included ..

Hopefully he is right but Chinese experts helping out in Italy commented that the lock down there is not strict enough.

Since those seem to be ThaiPBS's words and not Anutin's based on the quotes in the article, does that mean the rest of us are off the hook???  :cheesy:

Just like the self-discipline shown by people in other countries, stripping out supermarket supplies?

Who can be angry at a man with a smile like that? Even if he doesn´t have a clue about what he is doing and is a complete nut. (Emphasis on if)

This will escalate quickly.

No chance. Westerners are being lined up to be the scapegoats for this if the virus gets out of control.

Things will get worse and worse until everyone is begging for more rights to be taken away and mandatory vaccines.....

To Anutin: - Is it ok if I tell Thais that are not wearing masks that they are dirty virus spreading people and should be kicked out of the country?

.. just asking

I have had a funny feeling that China’s offer to “help” Thailand will be providing assistance for any potential lockdown.

Collective action to fight......

Traffic Deaths

Corruption and Scams

Pollution

Poverty

Human Trafficking

Never been possible in Thailand.

And now they are calling for collective action to fight a pandemic.  LOL!

My sister in Australia, who lives in the outback so not really affected, has written to say that the authorities have told the public if you are seriously ill with covid-19 and are over 65 don't bother going to hospital, you won't be treated, all resources will be spent on the young who have a good chance of pulling through. Pragmatic and logical I admit but it didn't take long for the veneer of civilisation to fall off. It would appear that the NHS will be going the way of triage so hide your pension book.

A neice of my Mrs has just brought the daily meal a sister has cooked, delivered to all family members every morning.

All the family will crowd into my pick-up this afternoon to go to the fruit, veg & meat market.

NO WAY self isolation, or ANY village isolation will works here.

Me? I'm getting a bad back from sitting on my recliner in front of the telly.

What is the difference between Anutin and a catfish?

One is a bottom dwelling, scum sucking scavenger and the other is just a fish.

To be fair to Anutin (you just won't believe how difficult that was to write!) He was addressing the Thai population on a Thai broadcasting station. It goes without saying that those of us who live or are visiting should simply follow the measures that are put in place for the Thais, whatever we think of them.

Yes, wasn't that utterly stupid, as utterly stupid as Anutin's outbursts.

So it looks like a lock-down sometime soon.
