Thailand to declare one-month emergency on March 26 - prime minister

Thaivisa breaking news banner.png

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand will be in an emergency mode from March 26 for a month to deal with the coronavirus outbreak, Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha told a news conference on Tuesday.

The emergency decree will mean the prime minister will have the executive power to declare further measures to contain the virus, including giving extra authority to officials and allowing the setting up of checkpoints to reduce people movements, Prayuth said.

He said details of the measures will be announced later.

Thailand reported three deaths and 106 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday. The country now has 827 cases and four fatalities since the outbreak began.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on Tuesday (March 24) declared a state of emergency to contain the escalating Covid-19 pandemic.

The Cabinet on Tuesday approved the emergency decree on public administration in an emergency situation.

The decree takes effect on March 26.

Three Covid-19 patients died on Monday while 106 new cases were confirmed, taking Thailand's total cases past 800, Dr Taweesin Visanuyothin, spokesman for the Public Health Ministry, said on Tuesday (March 24).

Given what has happened around the world, I suppose it was only a matter of time before serious restrictions were imposed. The big question of course will be in the details, as to what and how often are you allowed out to purchase food and other essentials. At the end of the day, if it can see the back of the virus here, we have to go along with it.

Wouldn't want to have my visa expiring in the next thirty days though as immigration don't seem to be overly kindly with overstays, regardless of how they happen.

Interesting idea - since once I was barred from leaving the country by the court, yet still incurred overstay at immigration.

And most of those hundreds are asked to visit their embassies in Bangkok to get any extension of stay. State of emergency? Hardly.

Read the thread in Visa section. Almost without exclusions. Me myself was refused an extension yesterday after spending an hour in the crowd of hundreds of farangs. I pray God I was not infected.

Can I go and get a TM 30 to show I have a home ?

Why don't you have a TM-30 ON FILE?

As I mentioned in another thread, what I heard was there will be a curfew from 7pm to 7am when they want you to stay indoors. No gathering in groups. Certain roads/routes might be closed. Mandatory to wear masks in certain areas. The full details to be released tomorrow (March 25).

why not have the details to hand when it's announced to prevent rumor and confusion?

Why introduce a state of emergency but fail to provide any details of what it entails?

Probably Wissanu going through the lawbooks to see if Article 44 can be reinstated!

This isn't how my wife tells the story of the Airport Link virus line at rush hour ..... I can only hope they enforce this but I am doubtful to say the least

So Article 44 is back in play, under a different name ??
