The warden of Nakhon Nayok prison has tested positive for Covid-19, Department of Corrections director-general Pol Colonel Narat Sawetnant said on Wednesday (April 1).

“Boonmee Wiboonjak reported to me that he had been receiving treatment for pneumonia at a hospital in Nakhon Nayok province since Monday and tested positive for Covid-19 on Tuesday,” he said. “He is being transferred to a better-equipped facility in Bangkok.”

Narat said Nakhon Nayok provincial prison has 988 prisoners and 49 staff, while the warden, who is on sick leave, has not been to the prison since March 27.

“Department of Corrections has appointed Dr Weerasak Hanpariphan, deputy director-general, to cooperate with Nakhon Nayok Public Health Office and Department of Disease Control Region 4 to investigate the patient’s travel history and collect samples from prisoners and staff immediately,” said Narat.

“Currently only two prisoners and one prison staff have tested positive for Covid-19 in Thailand and they all were already isolated from others and transferred to hospitals.”

Uh Oh. Don't tell the prisoners - maybe they will have the same situation as in Buriram.

But I guess collecting samples from prisoners will might cause suspicion......

Eighteen jailers in Nakhon Nayok province were quarantined for 14 days after the warden of Nakhon Nayok prison, Boonmee Wiboonjak, got infected with Covid-19.

The jailers were sent to two quarantine centres in the province. They are people who had made contact with the warden and there would be an investigation of people who had contact with the 18 officials.

Boonmee had been receiving treatment for pneumonia at a hospital from Monday and tested positive for Covid-19 on Tuesday. He was later transferred to a better-equipped facility in Bangkok.

The prison was being sanitised, while officials from the Disease Control Department were sent to inspect the place on Wednesday afternoon.

The prisoners are all wearing masks, right? ????

Eventually the news will break.....they can't keep sweeping around the sides of this.....the prisons must already be a mess....

The virus has even been detected in the Amazon......it's getting everywhere now and Thai prisons are not immune!

hmmm .... authorities must act quickly on prisons as it would be a catastrophe if the COVID 19 took hold within the prison system.
