Phuket Governor Phakkhaphong Thawiphat ordered all residents and travellers in the province to wear sanitary or cloth face masks when in public or face a fine of up to Bt20,000.

The order, announced on Monday, takes effect from today (April 7).

“The Phuket Committee for Communicable Disease has agreed to enforce the order as the Covid-19 situation in the province is escalating, with the number of infected people rising,” the announcement said. “Under this order, every person must wear a sanitary or cloth face mask when leaving their residences, and they must not do anything that could jeopardise public safety or spread the disease.”

Those who disobey the order will be in violation of Section 51 of the Communicable Disease Act BE 2558, which is punishable by a maximum fine of Bt20,000.

As of Monday, Phuket had 123 confirmed Covid-19 cases, with 1,695 others under investigation. Of these, 1,503 tested negative and have been discharged while 192 are still in hospital and 98 are awaiting lab results.

I agree wholeheartedly .... only problem with your very sane suggestion is that it would require intelligent. mature, and courageous actions by those that 'lead'? ... not something in great quantity with "those who must be obeyed" (Rumpole).

And from Bangkok RTP...

Reports have been buzzing through social media, from Thai citizens, claiming cops at checkpoints are extorting people for cash sums between Bht200 and Bht300

‘This is nonsense,’ said Pol Lt-Col Piya Uthayo at RTP HQ. ‘It’s fake news. We are not fining people. We are just encouraging mask use for health reasons.’

His remarks have been met with derision across the country and an avalanche of examples proving otherwise have been shared across platforms that leave Pol Lt-Col Piya Uthayo and his colleagues, resembling a fourth rate mob from a third-world African Banana Republic

He also pointed out that this extortion was not being carried out at 350 checkpoints across the provinces and seven around Bangkok.

Five more are about to be added in Bangkok and cash grabs will definitely not be imposed at any of these by RTP’s hard-working and honest police officers either, says the Lt-Col.
