Permethrin / Pyrethrin / FIPRONIL / Diatomaceous earth, NATURAL AGAINST TICKS ? have you tried these products ?

Hi boys and girls ????

 

i am looking for natural ways to fight dogs ticks, and it seems that these natural substances can be used and that they are less armfull than standard chemicals, what do you think ?

Diatomaceous Earth works but it's a fine powder, leaves a mess practically everywhere and is bad if inhaled.

for ticks, fleas etc, Diatomaceous Earth is the equivalent of dumping sharp shards of glass on them, it sticks to them, cut them and dries them out

 

you can also feed it to the dog to get rid of some internal parasites as well (worms, etc) but you make a little paste chunk and either hide it in  something else or force em to swallow (very chalky)

by the way, that last part works on humans too

 

it's a mechanical effect, compared to the other 3 who are insecticides.

it also works on bed bugs, dust mites, cockroaches, ants, etc.

if you plan on using it internally for anything don't buy the non-food grade (they have pool grade or others)

 

second question, you had all the links and this is the first lines for all three:

 

Fipronil is a broad-spectrum insecticide
Permethrin, sold under the brand name Nix among others, is a medication and insecticide.
The pyrethrins are a class of organic compounds normally derived from Chrysanthemum cinerariifolium that have potent insecticidal activity by targeting the nervous systems of insects.

 

doesn't mean that it doesn't work by the way, just stating they were insecticides vs just loose powder

You need to differentiate where you want to apply the tick control. Not on the dogs bodies I assume. There are good medications available for that. Search multiple previous discussions on this forum.

 

Insecticides for the dog environment can be considered, but permethrin and fipronil are not what you could consider natural, or organic program compatible.

 

To address your specific question:

Pyrethrins aka pyrethrum is a natural botanical substance, but short lived effectiveness. It biodegrades in 12 to 24 hours. I use it for a contact spray, for knock down of a chewing or sucking plant pest in an organic program, but it's not going to have the residual effectiveness needed for tick control.

 

Permethrin is a pyrethroid, the synthetic chemical derivative of the botanical pyrethrum. Not natural, but low toxicity for people and pets, and has residual effectiveness. It is used for tick collars and mosquito nets, and plant pest control. For spraying the bedding and dog run areas, do more research on appropriate use, Integrated Pest Management, combinations of insecticides and sanitation measures.

 

Fipronil is yet another class of chemical insecticide. It's not natural or organic program compatible. This is used in closed system termite control, but should not be sprayed into the open environment, lawn, trees, shrubs. It can be picked up by foraging pollinators and transported back to the hives where it could kill an entire honey bee colony. 

 

Do some more homework on DE, I haven't used it.  Search IPM for ticks. There are YouTube videos and articles from many sources available.

So only this one is natural but not so effective ?

Just because the product is  'natural' that doesn't mean it is 1: ineffective, or 2: non-toxic, cancerogenic etc.

Permethrin is a magic powder that gets rid of ants and ticks; however you can't use it on a dog as he will lick it and suffer consequences (you can put on a plastic cone to prevent this).

I use it occasionally in the dog pound area and had good results.

Bayticol is a good product as are the various pills sold. We change treatments and clean the dogs at least once a week by hand.

Permethrin is available in different packaging all over the place. If you have good eyesight, the chemical compounds by law must be printed on the package, in English. 

I usually buy Permethrin packaged as Chaindrite at Makro / Big C, Bayticol at a small animal pharmacy here in Buriram.

There are of course, various very effective medicaments on sale

I wouldn't call them poison (not a chemist) but, they are chemicals insecticide solutions
DE is just very fine sharp powder that screws little insects up.

 

you aren't poisoning them you, it works mechanically by sticking to them, cutting and dessication
